Scientists identify depression and anxiety biomarker in youths

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have discovered a cognitive biomarker -- a biological indicator of a disease -- for young adolescents who are at high risk of developing depression and anxiety. Their findings were published today, 28 November, in the journal PLOS ONE.

The test for the unique cognitive biomarker, which can be done on a computer, could be used as an inexpensive tool to screen adolescents for common emotional mental illnesses. As the cognitive biomarker may appear prior to the symptoms of depression and anxiety, early intervention (which has proven to be one of the most effective ways of combatting mental illness) could then be initiated.

For the study, 15-18 year old participants underwent genetic testing and environmental assessment, an exercise which would currently be too expensive and take too long to use as a widespread method of screening. The adolescents were then given a computer test to gauge how they process emotional information. The test had the participants evaluate whether words were positive, negative or neutral (examples included 'joyful' for positive, 'failure' for negative, and 'range' for neutral).

Those adolescents with a variation of one gene (the short form of the serotonin transporter) as well as exposure to intermittent family arguments for longer than six months and violence between parents before the age of six were shown to have marked difficulty in evaluating the emotion within the words, indicating an inability to process emotional information. Previous research associated a maladjusted perception and response to emotions, as seen here, with a significantly increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Professor Ian Goodyer, Principal Investigator on the study from the University of Cambridge, said: "Whether we succumb to anxiety and depression depends in part on our tendencies to think well or poorly of ourselves at troubled times. How it comes about that some people see the 'glass half full' and think positively whereas other see the 'glass half empty' and think negatively about themselves at times of stress is not known.

"The evidence is that both our genes and our early childhood experiences contribute to such personal thinking styles. Before there are any clinical symptoms of depression or anxiety, this test reveals a deficient ability to efficiently and effectively perceive emotion processes in some teenagers -- a biomarker for low resilience which may lead to mental illnesses."

The scientists hope that their research could lead to developing inexpensive cognitive tests to screen for these illnesses, particularly in people identified as being at high social and genetic risk.

Dr Matthew Owens from the University of Cambridge added: "Having difficulty in processing emotions is likely to contribute to misunderstanding other people's intentions and can make individuals emotionally vulnerable. This research opens up the possibility of identifying individuals at greatest risk and helping them with techniques to process emotions more easily or training them to respond more adaptively to negative feedback."

Professor Goodyer further stated: "These types of cognitive biomarker can also be used to aid therapeutics by helping to determine which treatments are likely to work best for types of depressions and anxiety disorders. This is important, as although we have good treatments we do not yet know what works best for whom."

Professor Barbara Sahakian, a co-author on the paper from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge said: "The way we perceive and respond to emotions affects our resilience and whether we succumb to depression and other maladaptive ways of thinking. Using the biomarker identified in this study, it is possible to develop a screening programme to identify those at greatest risk."

Mental health problems are common in young people with approximately 10% of children (aged 5-16 years old) in Great Britain being assessed as having a mental disorder of some kind including conduct disorder, emotional disorder or hyperactivity. In addition, adolescence is a critical period for the development of depressions.

Chinese terra cotta warriors had real, and very carefully made, weapons
The 7,000 soldiers buried with Qin Shi Huang in 210 B.C. were made of clay. But the bronze weapons the terra cotta army carried into the enormous tomb complex near Xi?an in western China were the real things: tens of thousands of swords, axes, spears, lances and crossbows, all as capable of spilling blood as anything Qin?s real army wielded when they triumphed, ending centuries of war and uniting China under a single rule for the first time

MG Leasing Provides Credit Facility to Westlake Financial

Westlake Financial Services announced a new $30 million credit facility with MG Leasing Corporation (MGL), a Japanese leasing company. The credit facility collateralizes Westlake?s auto finance receivables.

Paul Kerwin, Westlake?s chief operating officer, made special note that MGL is the first Japanese finance company to partner with Westlake Financial Services. ?We appreciate MGL?s very competitive pricing and strong confidence in our business plan,? Kerwin says. ?We are honored to say this is MGL?s first financing deal inside the U.S. as well as Westlake?s first partnership with a Japanese finance firm. With this additional liquidity, Westlake is well positioned to expand and continue our record growth that we have been experiencing the past 25 years and into the future.?

?This transaction is meaningful because MGL is the first Japanese finance company to fully understand and appreciate Westlake?s unique business model and the growing sub-prime market,? says Atsushi Suzuki, Westlake board member and Marubeni Corporation representative. ?Westlake?s funding structure has become even stronger compared to competitors by adding Japanese financing. I hope this opportunity will continue to grow, and bring even more Japanese financing to the U.S. sub-prime auto market.?

Ian Anderson, Westlake president, adds, ?We are pleased to have such strong financial partners like Wells Fargo, RBS, JP Morgan and others, and diversifying our funding sources to include international finance companies is the key to stabilizing Westlake?s funding base and supporting our expanding portfolio of services.?

MGL is a joint venture of Marubeni Corporation (which acquired a 20% stake in Westlake Financial Services in July 2011) and Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Company, a subsidiary of a top four global banking institution, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group.

Westlake Financial Services is an internet based, privately held finance company that specializes in the acquisition and servicing of sub-prime to prime automotive retail installment contracts.

Amanda Bynes returns to Twitter, Instagram

By Us Weekly

Amanda Bynes on Instagram.

Amanda Bynes is coming out of retirement -- online, that is.?The 26-year-old starlet famously (and abruptly) stripped down her Twitter account to nearly nothing in August, after she was accused of being involved in a hit-and-run accident -- one of two such charges she faced this year. But on Friday, Nov. 23, the "What a Girl Wants" actress resurfaced on the site.?

PHOTOS: Amanda's life in the spotlight

"My phone got taken twice but I got it back & am waiting to get reverified. I love my fans!" she tweeted, along with a note telling her nearly 284,000 followers to subscribe to her new Instagram account.

The former Nickelodeon child star then began posting a series of Instagrammed shots in which she appears in a fur coat, red turban, oversized sunglasses, and maroon-colored lipstick.?

PHOTOS: Child stars gone bad

"What up doe?" she wrote below one photo, which appeared three separate times on her account. (Each version of the pic had a different caption. One was accompanied by "(Love) my turban!" Another read "Bout to get my nails done. :D What color should I get? I want to go long and pointy!")?

Bynes also shared a photo of her super-skinny legs, with the note: "Losing weight is hard to do! I love jeans with sexy holes, mine are from Current Elliot :D"?

PHOTOS: Celebs in trouble with the law

The somewhat unusual self-portraits are the first the star has posted in quite a while. She's been keeping a low profile as she deals with her many legal troubles -- in addition to the hit-and-run charges, she faces a DUI and two counts of driving with a suspended license -- but she insists she's doing just fine.

"I'm not 'troubled.' I don't get naked in public," she told Us Weekly earlier this month, after InTouch published a story claiming that the actress had paraded naked around an NYC tanning salon recently. "I'm 26, a multi-millionaire, retired. Please respect my privacy."

Voices Against Brain Cancer Releases Statement Commending ...

Following reports of a community lending support for a young girl battling glioblastoma, Voices Against Brain Cancer releases statement.

New York City, NY (PRWEB) November 26, 2012

On November 26, 2012, nonprofit organization Voices Against Brain Cancer (VABC) releases a statement following reports of a community lending support for a young girl battling glioblastoma.

According to Amy Demelia, ?Zoe, the daughter of Jen and Pat McMorran, is battling glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer that is very rare in children. She is currently undergoing treatment at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.? Demelia goes on to state, ?Although Zoe is experiencing some difficulties on her left side as a result of a stroke, she recently was thrilled to return to cheerleading, an activity she loves. She also started the sixth grade this fall at North Attleboro Middle School, alongside her twin sister and top supporter, Avery.? The article explains, ?[D]emonstrations of support have been easy to find throughout the community.?

?The McMorran family said they want to let the community know how grateful they are for every helpful gesture and kind word they have received,? stated Demelia.

VABC representative Clay Darrohn, states, ?The hardships that the McMorran family face as their young daughter battles the devastating diagnosis of brain cancer are difficult to imagine, but it is heartwarming and inspiring to see a community lend its support and care while the family goes through this trying time. We believe that community support is essential in dealing with this disease and that through research, support and continued raising of awareness ? we can continue to find better treatment options.?

VABC has a wide variety of initiatives in place for brain cancer research, awareness and support. The organization?s research grants fund cutting-edge research programs that will have a monumental impact on the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer. VABC currently funds research at several esteemed institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cleveland Clinic, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, John Hopkins, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Yale, to name a few.

VABC?s mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.

Buffett: Economy OK if?taxes rise for rich

Super investor Warren Buffett, the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, speaks with TODAY's Matt Lauer about Cyber Monday sales figures, consumer confidence and the future of the American economy.

By Ben Popken, TODAY contributor

Raising taxes on the rich won't dampen?economic growth?and would "raise the morale of the middle class," billionaire investor Warren Buffett told the TODAY show Tuesday.

?

Echoing a theme he has stressed often, Buffett downplayed the idea that higher taxes for the wealthy, as proposed by the Obama administration as part of a deal to resolve the "fiscal cliff,"?would scare off critical investment for job creation. Republicans argue that raising taxes on people in higher tax brackets would choke off investment and slow the economy at a time when it can ill afford it.

?

Buffett disagrees. "No, and I think it would have a great effect on the morale of the middle class," said Buffett,?in the first of two live interviews with TODAY's?Matt Lauer. "They've had to watch guys like me pay below the rate by that paid by the people in my office."

?

Also known as the?"Oracle of Omaha" for his investing acumen, Buffett's views?on the economy are widely followed,?including on whether we're really going to go off the "fiscal cliff" of $500 million in tax hikes and spending cuts.

?

?

The?CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has been vocal on the economy lately, proposing in a New York Times op-ed Monday that there be?a minimum tax for the wealthy.

?

"I'm confident," said Buffet when asked about how he was feeling about the economy. "I can't speak for others, but at Berkshire Hathaway, we buy and sell stocks every day. America's a winner."

?

Lauer brought up a recent quote from Honeywell CEO David Cote who told Meet the Press that he and others like him were feeling a lack of confidence in the political process, so much so that the uncertainty was making them keep their money on the sidelines and preventing them from making additional investments, including hiring.

?

"At Berkshire Hathaway, we're investing 9 billion in plant equipment, a record, breaking last year's record. It's always uncertain," said Buffett.

?

"December 6th 1941 was uncertain," said Buffett, referring to the attack on Pearl Harbor. "We just didn't know it."

?

When asked whether Congress would really enact a strong proposal such as?the one Buffett made in his Times op-ed, which suggested setting a minimum 30 percent tax for millionaires, Buffet said, "I wouldn't be?surprised. They're going to make a deal."

?

Now there's a new Buffett book, "Tap-Dancing to Work" that trace his career through 80 different FORTUNE Magazine articles over the years. If there's one thing that stuck out from the timeline, Carol Loomis, FORTUNE editor, who collected and expanded the articles for the book, told TODAY, it's?"how consistent he's been in his thinking. He's never changed."?

"I couldn't be more boring," said Buffett. "I just look at the facts and wherever they lead me, I go."

Is this the?secret to Buffett's success??Lauer asked Loomis. It's hard, she said, because other investors "get emotional."

Buffett is known for finding undervalued companies with strong fundamentals and good management. "It's simple, but not easy," said Loomis. "That's why other people can't do it. He's thinking about business 24/7."

Lauer asked if this book was a goodbye letter of sorts. "What's it going to mean to the world when he hangs up his investing shoes?" he asked.

Loomis said, "He will be remembered. His role in life will be remembered for the next century. I don't know whether investing or philanthropy is going to be the lead item.?People are going to be reading about Buffet 100 years from now."

About that retirement... "Got a date in mind?" Lauer asked the 82-year old businessman.

Buffett just laughed.

West Seattle holidays: Menashe family starts decking the house

November 25, 2012 at 10:59 pm | In Holidays, West Seattle Christmas lights, West Seattle news | No Comments

The Sunday sunshine was a boon to many who wanted to get their Christmas lights up ? including the small army of family and friends working on West Seattle?s biggest and brightest display at the Menashe family?s home in the 5600 block of Beach Drive. They started work at 8 this morning, Josh Menashe told us, and by the time we stopped by about five hours later, they?d made a lot of progress. We got to meet two exuberant helpers ? two of Jack and Linda Menashe?s grandchildren, Jacob Menashe?s daughters Sophia and McKenna, who were riding in the cherry picker:

The girls helped show us some of the new/newer decorations waiting in the yard ? including candy canes taller than they are:

Here?s the biggest of the light-laden stars waiting to be put up around the property:

And while some of the shrubbery already was decked with bulbs, more lights ? in boxes and tubs ? waited to be added to the mix:

The Menashes will continue working on their display throughout the week, and they?re expecting to officially turn the lights on at 7 pm this Saturday (December 1st) ? if you want to be there, that?ll give you (and us!) time after the West Seattle Junction Christmas Tree Lighting celebration, (5 pm Saturday). Another date to note ? the evening of December 15th, Santa will be at the house for photos, as a benefit for the West Seattle Food Bank.

Media Business and the Future of Journalism (JEM499): Reacting to ...

US broadcast networks have seen a sharp drop in basic ratings this Fall season. ABC, CBS, and Fox have all seen average prime-time ratings for the coveted 18-49 demographic at least 10% lower than last year, with Fox's ratings a full third lower.? Only NBC has seen its average ratings for this demographic increase (led by their Sunday Night NFL programs, which have regularly topped other programs this fall).

? Network executives are eager to suggest that viewing's not off - just delayed and/or accessed via alternative channels.
?People are watching more programming than ever but they are increasingly time-shifting,? said Les Moonves, chief executive of CBS, in a conference call last week, echoing the views of executives at News Corp, Time Warner and Walt Disney. ?Because more and more people are absorbing content, and we?re going to get paid more and more.?
?? Another, unstated, reason for increased time-shifting may be the massive number of negative political advertising - viewers may be switching their viewing to recorded versions to more easily bypass political ads.? If direct viewing rebounds, that would suggest that political ad avoidance may have been at work.? But even if that was one of the initial prompts for time-shifting, the added value of greater viewer choice and control could encourage increased delays in viewing.
?? TV might also be seeing the result of weaker programming among broadcast networks, and the increased quality and availability of original programming on cable networks and Internet video streaming sites.?
Bob Iger, chief executive of Disney, acknowledged that the ratings drop-off could be related to the quality of the programming. ?The other story is that there seems to be somewhat of an absence of what I?ll call new, big, real, buzz-worthy hits,? he said. ?Because of that, I would say that it would be premature to either write the epitaph or suggest we?re seeing a trend.?
?? The trend has the networks pushing for a further expansion in ratings measurement.? Working with Nielsen, the broadcast networks and advertisers agreed in 2007 on a new benchmark for setting ad rates - C3, which counted all viewings within 3 days. But three days is no longer enough for the networks, who are pushing for C7- counting any viewing of a program within a week of its first airing, from any source, on any platform.? Even then, some researchers suggest that C7 counts only 90% of all program viewing.
Despite TV executive's cries for more accountability, national TV advertisers aren't necessarily interested in extending C3 to C7 ratings. Better to leap ahead to the next phrase of measurement to behavioral or contextual metrics, including addressable and interactive messaging, something that will show a more exacting return on their media investment ROI.
?? Part of their reluctance is that advertisers in the original airing aren't necessarily watched, or even included in, delayed viewing or alternative delivery channels (say on an affiliated cable network or streamed from the network's website).? Networks understandably want to know the full size and make-up of program audiences (count everything), but advertisers (just as understandably) only want to pay for the audiences that actually watch their ads.? It's unclear whether any single metric can satisfy both.? And as the quote suggests, online metrics can do more than simply counting exposure (viewing) - opening the way for advertisers and marketers who have priorities other than simple reach.

? Nielsen will try to develop one, as it works to maintain its dominance in TV ratings. As noted in an earlier post, they've already tried to get industry agreement and ratification of its own limited online metrics approach.? More recently, it's bought SocialGuide, a firm that supplies real-time Social TV data on thousands of programs aired on both English-language and Spanish-language channels in the U.S.? Noting that a third of Twitter users regularly tweet about TV-related content, Nielsen announced the acquisition with its typical bravado:

?The skyrocketing adoption and use of social media among consumers is transforming TV-watching into a more immediate and shared experience," stated Steve Hasker, president of global media products and advertiser solutions at Nielsen. "As TV networks see this phenomenon unfold, they require understanding of the impact of social TV on their programming, ratings and advertising effectiveness.?

? I think it's pretty clear that we're seeing a significant shift in audience TV watching preferences and behaviors - a change of the scope (if maybe not size) of that prompted by the rise of cable and cable networks.? Regardless of funding mechanisms, media outlets are facing increasing competition, and need reliable and valid ways of measuring audiences and preferences - not only for their traditional distribution channel, but across all of the various media platforms they and the viewer utilize.? As for advertising, TV needs to realize that advertisers don't really care about a program's audience - they want and need measures of audiences for the ads, and would love to also find ways to measure an ad's level of engagement with, and impact on, its audience.? And networks and program producers/owners should also start looking for metrics on audience engagement and impact.

? That's why I think the TV and advertising industries shouldn't focus on finding a single metric.? That may have been fine when their was only one viewing option and limited competition, but in today's more competitive media environment it's time to realize that TV and advertisers need audience metrics for different purposes - and thus should really use different metrics.

The Internet isn't a good excuse to be a bad friend

Corbis stock

By Sam Biddle, Gizmodo

We're beyond over-sharing ? we're perma-sharing. Between texts, Twitter, and Facebook, we have more vessels for venting than we have thoughts worth sharing. So you might assume, with all these ways to communicate, that a friend in trouble will make it obvious to everyone. Don't. Don't assume anything.

If you had any pals or family anywhere near Hurricane Sandy, you might've wondered, even briefly, about their safety. And a lot of them probably assuaged that worry with a status update ? "I'm fine!"

Or, if it wasn't that clear a statement, then there was at least some kind of electronic transmission that confirmed they still had a heartbeat. A mild complaint about the storm on Facebook, you might think, is proof that the storm hadn't ruined their lives completely.

Maybe you were proactive ? you checked in yourself, with an "Are you alright??" wall post, or a "Hope everyone in NJ is safe" tweet. Maybe you even got some positive replies.

None of that is enough.

It's never been easier to pretend than it is today. Social media give us civilization's strongest tool for denying reality. Are you broke as hell? That doesn't matter ? share a picture of your speakers. Is your social life in the musty gutter? Nothing a picture of you with your arm around some stranger can't remedy.

Even if your existence is horrible, pathetic, and devoid of any meaning, just write "Feeling great today." You're feeling great? I'll take your word for it. Because when everyone has hundreds (if not thousands) of friends, it's just not possible to put everything they say under real scrutiny.

The Web is great for volume, but for the deep touch, you still need to act like an actual human being. You need to actually hear someone's voice ? or at least pull a long, private email out of them. We're all insecure, finite monkeys who don't want to admit weakness and fragility in a place where thousands of people can read it.

That's normal. It's not normal to expect someone to put forth their panic, storm anxiety, fear, and general angst on Facebook. We put the people we want to be on Facebook, not the people we are. And sometimes those people are generally terrified of a storm ? or something else ? and not doing fine. You'll never know unless you truly ask.

Call someone if you're worried about them. Write a note. Go visit them if they're nearby. And please, please ? just because your mom is on Facebook and in unrelenting, often irritating virtual contact with you doesn't mean you can stop calling her.

It's more important than ever to be a real friend, and not just a Facebook friend. Maybe the next Timeline update will solve t

his ? but for now, there's no substitute.

User Manual is Gizmodo's guide to etiquette. It appears as if by magic every Friday.

For Teachers Only

For Teachers Only

For your information, this article is for teachers only. If you are not a teacher you are welcome to stick around for an inside scoop on teacher business. Teachers are a special breed of beings with special interests. Interests like supplementing meager wages and making ends meet.

Also for your information, teachers are not exactly paupers. They just live on very modest incomes ... enough for a roof over the head and for food on the table. It is not an income worthy of the important job they do.

An occasional luxury is not unknown to teachers but they will pay for that luxury by pinching in other areas. Feeling the pinch is standard existence for teachers ? even when the economy is good. But, don?t worry about teachers. Teachers are survivors. They?ve lovingly survived the classroom, after all.

Who cares about teachers anyway? They?re demanding, they?re picky, they?re persistent, they?re challenging, and they are sometimes annoying ? don?t even worry about paying them decently ... right?

Teachers, there are many ways to supplement an income but one of the most interesting is through internet marketing. I know, the term internet marketing is enough to scare you to pieces but it is just wording. The truth of the matter is you can supplement your income through web site building.

Surf the internet and you will find hundreds of sites showing you how to buy, sell or create a web site. You will see sites willing to build a website for you. I say, skip all the frustration and simply Google, ?Wealthy Affiliate University.? They will get you started on web site building at no initial charge.

For your further information, internet marketing can be done from home in your spare time. That makes it perfect for a busy teacher. If you are a newbie and have very little internet experience there are web sites that cater to a newbie status with tips, hints, and helpful suggestions. WA is one of them.

Syria opposition bloc elects Christian as leader

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? Syria's main opposition group in exile elected a left-wing veteran dissident born into a Christian family as its new president on Friday, a choice that could help counter Western concerns about possible Islamist influence over the group.

George Sabra, a Communist-turned-social-democrat and former high school teacher who once wrote for the Arabic version of Sesame Street, said his election as head of the Syrian National Council is proof that Syrians are not beholden to sectarianism.

"This day is a victory of the Syrian people to prove all over the world the reality of the Syrians ... as young people shouted in the streets, 'Syrian people are one, one, one,'" he said moments after his victory was announced at a conference in Doha, Qatar.

Sabra's election came on the eve of a crucial decision for the SNC.

The Istanbul-based group, widely seen as out of touch with activists fighting the regime of President Bashar Assad, must decide Saturday whether to join a broader opposition leadership, an idea promoted by Western and Arab backers of those trying to oust President Bashar Assad.

Under the plan, the new group would form a transitional government in rebel-held areas of Syria and presumably serve as a conduit for foreign aid to the opposition.

However, SNC members have expressed reservations, such as fears the SNC's influence would be diluted. The SNC, still the largest political opposition group, would get only about one third of some 60 seats in the new group to make room for activists inside Syria.

The SNC was to give its answer on Friday, but asked for more time after its own leadership elections dragged on and divisions arose among the members over whether to join the internationally backed initiative.

The SNC had promised its Qatari hosts and the author of the new plan, Syrian dissident Riad Seif, to decide quickly whether to accept the idea in principle. However, Sabra suggested Friday that negotiations over an acceptable formula could continue beyond the weekend.

"The problem is, there is no answer by yes or no," said Sabra, a 65-year-old father of three. "This is politics," he added with a laugh.

The gray-haired, jovial Sabra said earlier this week that he and Seif are longtime friends, and even shared a jail cell at one point. Sabra, a veteran dissident and leftist activist, said he was jailed for eight years starting in 1987 and for two brief stretches in the summer and fall of 2011, under Assad and his father and predecessor Hafez.

He said he was a leading member of Syria's Communist party, but in 2005 his group became social democrat.

Sabra left Syria several months after the uprising against Bashar Assad erupted in March 2011 and moved to Paris. Sabra said he is a former geography teacher and writer for children's television, including for the Arabic version of Sesame Street produced in Kuwait.

The SNC's new vice president chosen Friday was Mohammed Farouk Taifur, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a region-wide Islamist movement that has risen to power in several countries in the wake of the Arab Spring uprisings.

US Shale Gas Supplies won't Last Ten Years: An Interview with Bill ...

The shale gas "miracle" is overhyped and bound to disappoint. That's what energy expert Bill Powers argues in his upcoming book. But Powers tells The Energy Report that this could be a very good thing for oil and gas companies and their shareholders, and he is placing his bets accordingly.

The Energy Report: Bill, you have a new book coming out next spring entitled "Cold, Hungry and in the Dark: Exploding the Natural Gas Supply Myth." What is your basic argument?

Bill Powers: My thesis is that the importance of shale gas has been grossly overstated; the U.S. has nowhere close to a 100-year supply. This myth has been perpetuated by self-interested industry, media and politicians. Their mantra is that exploiting shale gas resources will promote untold economic growth, new jobs and lead us toward energy independence.

In the book, I take a very hard look at the facts. And I conclude that the U.S. has between a five- to seven-year supply of shale gas, and not 100 years. That is far lower than the rosy estimates put out by the U.S. Energy Information Administration and others. In the real world, many companies are taking write-downs of their reserves.

Importantly, I give examples of how certain people and institutions are promoting the shale gas myth even as they benefit from it economically. This book will change a lot of opinions about how large the shale gas resources really are in the U.S. and around the planet.

TER: How did you obtain your information?

BP: I spent three years doggedly researching this book. Most of the information came from publicly available sources. I used a fair amount of work done by Art Berman, who has written the forward for the book. Art is a leading expert on determining the productivity of shale gas plays. I contacted a lot of other geologists and petroleum engineering professionals and had them review my conclusions about declining production.

Put simply: There is production decline in the Haynesville and Barnett shales. Output is declining in the Woodford Shale in Oklahoma. Some of the older shale plays, such as the Fayetteville Shale, are starting to roll over. As these shale plays reverse direction and the Marcellus Shale slows down its production growth, overall U.S. production will fall. At the same time, Canadian production is falling. And Canada has historically been the main natural gas import source for the U.S. In fact, Canada has already experienced a significant decline in gas production?about 25%, since a peak in 2002?and has dramatically slowed its exports to the United States.

TER: What does this mean for investors?

BP: The decline is a set-up for a gas crisis, a supply crunch that will lead to much higher prices similar to what we saw in the 1970s.

Interestingly, during the lead-up to that crisis, the gas industry mounted a significant advertising campaign trumpeting the theme, "There's plenty of gas!" Now, it is true that there was a huge ramp-up for gas during the post-World War II period that lasted through the late 1960s as demand for gas for the U.S. manufacturing base grew rapidly. But we hit a production peak in the early 1970s during a time of rapidly growing demand. This led to a huge spike in prices that lasted until 1984.

It was very difficult to destroy demand, so the crisis was resolved by building hundreds of coal-fired power plants and dozens of nuclear power plants. But today, gas-fired plants are popular as we try to turn away from coal. This time around, those options are no longer available. Nuclear plants are still an option, but the time and money involved in keeping our aging nuclear power plant fleet operational, let alone building new plants, will be quite significant.

TER: How will the contraction of the natural gas supply affect its price?

BP: We will see a new equilibrium price for gas at much higher levels than the present. I vehemently disagree with industry observers who say that the U.S. is the next big exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). I believe that the U.S. will soon be increasing LNG imports, and that U.S. prices will move back to world levels.

We are currently seeing between $13 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) and $15/Mcf in South America as Brazil and Argentina import LNG. We're seeing $17/Mcf in Japan and similar prices in Korea. The only place that is not increasing its LNG imports right now is Europe, and that is being made up for by increasing demand in Asia.

TER: How will a contracting supply affect the prospects of companies that are exploring and developing gas fields in North America today?

BP: The companies that can find new reserves of oil and gas will enter a golden era as prices skyrocket. There has been a lot of consolidation in the industry over the last five years. In Canada, very few juniors have started up since 2007. This is the fifth anniversary of the Halloween Massacre, when the Canadian government changed the laws regarding trusts, which really shrank the amount of capital going into junior companies.

The bigger North American companies are consolidating, because it is harder to acquire prospective land. Plus, the cost of drilling wells has gone up. But juniors that can find new reserves and that can increase production per share and cash-flow per share will have a wonderful rise over the next three to five years. Companies are helped by the upward trend of ever-higher oil prices and we will soon see much higher gas prices. And remember, all of this is happening at a time of historically low interest rates. So companies that can get to critical size and borrow money at today's low rates have a chance to deploy that capital into some very high-return projects. Good companies are trading at historically low multiples of cash flow or multiples of NAV (net asset value). So there are some great values out there that really make the energy sector attractive.

TER: What names do you like in the shale oil and gas space?

BP: Among larger U.S. companies, I like a $7 billion ($7B) company called Denbury Resources Inc. (DNR:NYSE). It is the second-largest producer of carbon dioxide (CO2)-flooded oil?or enhanced oil recovery using CO2. Denbury just sold its Bakken assets to Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM:NYSE) for $1.5 billion (B). It has a very, very large resource base and growing production from its CO2 fields. It is very well managed and well capitalized.

Oil sands producers will benefit, such as MEG Energy (MEG:TSX), which is ramping up production. There has not been a lot of interest in the oil sands over the last couple of years because of the price differential between what the oil sands producers are getting and the higher price of WTI or Brent. But the differential has started to narrow during the last few weeks, and that is really going to benefit oil sands firms.

Another company that is very well positioned in the process of splitting itself apart is Petrobank Energy & Resources Ltd. (PBG:TSX). It is divesting ownership of its Petro Bakken assets to shareholders. Petro Bakken has a very unique set of assets. Even though it has had operational issues over the last couple of years, it will still be producing over 50,000 barrels a day going into year-end. It also pays a very substantial dividend, so investors in that company are getting paid to wait.

On the gas side, Advantage Oil and Gas Ltd. (AAV:NYSE; AAV:TSX) is very well managed and has a fine asset base. It is a very low-cost producer, and has a lot of room to grow profitably in a higher gas price environment?which is where we are headed.

PetroQuest Energy Inc. (PQ:NYSE) has good assets in the Mississippi Lime and significant offshore assets with high-production wells. Management has done a good job during a period of low gas prices by bringing in partners and hedging their risks. The company has kept its balance sheet intact and is well positioned to take advantage of a turn in gas prices.

TER: Does your analysis about the looming contraction in the supply of shale gas apply to shale oil?

BP: Shale oil is a significant resource, of course, but it is not a "game changer." It is in the same category with shale gas. The Bakken is a very material resource and it will provide decades of production. However, Bakken production has peaked in Saskatchewan. It has peaked in Montana. It is approaching its peak in North Dakota. This does not mean that we are running out of drilling locations, or that production is going to fall off a cliff tomorrow. However, I expect production to plateau before long. Something similar is happening in the Eagle Ford in Texas. A lot of the wells there have extremely high decline rates and production may be hitting a plateau. In the overall context of the United States, we see a continuous decline in the Gulf of Mexico and California. There is significant decline in Alaska. Those producers are struggling to keep up the flow through the Alyeska pipeline without having to do a major retrofit of the pipeline to put in more pumps due to the low throughput pressure. We are seeing a decline in California of about 15,000 barrels every year. The overall increase in oil production in the U.S. in the last few years has been wonderful, but many oil fields are getting long in the tooth, and I would expect a plateau to soon emerge.

TER: Will decline spur investment in alternative energy sources?

BP: Yes, absolutely. Electricity prices are often set by the highest-cost producer. Until recently, those electricity producers used natural gas as their feedstock. Low natural gas prices have depressed electricity prices in some areas. This makes the economics of a lot of alternative energy projects very difficult. But as gas prices rise, electricity prices will also rise. This will make solar and wind projects more viable. For example, in California, electricity prices rose significantly over the last decade despite falling gas prices. But as the efficiency of solar panels has improved, solar costs have declined and reached grid parity. Residential solar makes a lot of sense in California. And as solar efficiencies continue to improve, costs will continue to fall.

TER: Let's talk about shifting patterns of supply and demand for natural gas around the world. How will this impact the North American producers?

BP: Let's start by looking at Trinidad and Tobago, which supplies the United States with 50% of its LNG imports. The country has taken huge write-down of its gas reserves. Production declined in 2011 and will likely decline again in 2012. The country has only nine years of proven reserves left. Trinidad and Tobago needs to find new sources of gas to feed the very large fertilizer plants operating on the island and maintain exports.

Another example of declining gas exports is Indonesia. Historically, Indonesia has been the largest exporter of LNG in Asia. In 2006, the Indonesian government changed the law to focus more on internal consumption and to create jobs for 200 million (200M) people. It cut down on LNG exports beginning in 2007. I expect that trend to continue as the country switches from being an oil exporter to an oil importer.

In the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates was an exporter of LNG for decades; it is now an importer. Dubai imports LNG. Fujairah will soon become an importer. Kuwait now imports LNG. Oman has reduced exports to focus on building its steel industry. The trend of decline is happening everywhere. I discuss this quite a bit in my book.

TER: Do you think that international markets pay enough attention to finding and developing new oil and gas resources?

BP: It's a very difficult thing to explore as the world becomes more and more resource mature and resource nationalism rises. It is very difficult to explore off the coast of Nigeria or in Russia or in Iraq, where the political situation is very unstable. Fifteen years ago, Exxon Mobil was divesting its onshore U.S. assets. Now, Statoil ASA (STO:NYSE; STL:OSE) has come to the United States in a significant way for the Bakken. BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP:NYSE; BHPLF:OTCPK) is buying into the shale gas and shale oil business in the United States. Frankly, onshore in North America is not the easiest place to operate. But there are not a lot of other options available right now.

TER: What are the likely impacts in industrial and residential demand in oil and gas prices for North America during the next decade or so?

BP: Efficiency will improve. The U.S. has already dropped its demand for oil by about 2M barrels from its peak in 2007. Part of this was due to the recession; part of it is due to an increase in the miles-per-gallon standard. The trend will continue as it becomes more and more unaffordable for people to drive cars.

And we will see efficiencies in the structure of the electricity grid. The U.S. currently wastes around two-thirds of the consumable electricity that goes into the power grid through line loss. I envision a trend toward distributed energy production. People will put solar panels on their rooftops and sell sun power to their neighbors. The big utilities are fighting this tooth and nail in California. But there is a movement toward electricity co-ops. As electricity becomes more expensive, people will find other ways to conserve. Demand will increase for residential geothermal heating and cooling; the economics of geothermal home heating and cooling systems have improved drastically in the last 20 years, and it continues to get better. We will also see the emergence of an electric car industry. It's had a rocky start, but it will move forward as gas prices in the U.S. go north of $5 per gallon.

TER: How much weight do you suggest that investors put on gas shares in their portfolios?

BP: It depends upon the individual investor's profile. Everybody is different. But there are some great gas companies that are fairly cheap. Ultra Petroleum Corp. (UPL:NYSE) is a very inexpensive well run, low-cost producer. The bottom line is that investing in things that are out of style at the moment are often the greatest investments.

TER: It's been a very interesting talk, Bill, thank you.

BP: You are quite welcome.

30 Condos Auctioned at University Town Center - in Hyattsville Patch

It took less than two hours for Resource Real Estate to auction 30 condominiums at the University Town Center development in Hyattsville last month, according to information released by the company earlier this week.?

The auction, which took place at the Greenbelt Marriot on Oct. 28, saw buyers spend more than $5 million to snatch up well apportioned condos at One Independence Plaza and Plaza Lofts 22. According to reports in The Washington Post, buyers were able to pick up condos for a bargain, hundreds of thousands of dollars off what they were going for when the buildings were completed?in 2007 and 2008, before the economic downturn.

"We are pleased with Sunday?s results," Said Stephanie Wilkinson of Impact Real Estate Solutions. "This is a great foundation for a successful sell-out of these units in this community"

The larger One Independence Plaza, with a total of 112 residential units, 75 of which were already sold, saw 28 condominiums sold during the auction. Of those 28 auctioned, 21 were two bedroom units ranging from 1030 to 1130 square feet, seven were one bedroom units ranging from 603 to 698 square feet.?

The smaller, Plaza Lofts 22?sometimes called the 'Toaster' by city officials for its rounded metal design?saw the first five of its 22 residences auctioned off. Before the late October auction, not a single condominium had been sold at Plaza Lofts 22.?

Now, less than 11 condominums remain unsold at One Independence Plaza and18 condos remain unsold at Plaza Lofts 22. Resource Real Estate will be selling the remaining units through traditional marketing and sales efforts.?

Sharks: Bad creatures or bad image?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? Historically, the media have been particularly harsh to sharks, and it's affecting their survival. The results of a Michigan State University study, appearing in the current issue of the journal Conservation Biology, reviewed worldwide media coverage of sharks -- and the majority isn't good.

Australian and U.S. news articles were more likely to focus on negative reports featuring sharks and shark attacks rather than conservation efforts. Allowing such articles to dominate the overall news coverage diverts attention from key issues, such as shark populations are declining worldwide and many species are facing extinction, said Meredith Gore, MSU assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife and the School of Criminal Justice.

"The most important aspect of this research is that risks from ?- rather than to -- sharks continue to dominate news coverage in large international media markets," said Gore, part of the research team led by Bret Muter, formerly at MSU and now with the Udall Foundation. "To the extent that media reflect social opinion, this is problematic for shark conservation."

According to the study, more than 52 percent of global coverage focused on shark attacks on people, and sharks were portrayed negatively in nearly 60 percent of the coverage. That's compared to a mere 10 percent featuring shark conservation issues and just 7 percent focusing on shark biology or ecology.

Another interesting fact from the study is who is quoted in the stories. Conservation groups were typically quoted or cited highlighting negative effects on sharks. They weren't, however, part of stories about shark conservation.

"This suggests that conservation groups are either not being sought out by the media in regards to shark conservation issues or they are not engaging enough to make headlines," Gore said.

The issues affecting sharks' survival are many. They include the threat of overfishing (overharvesting sharks for their fins), pollution, habitat loss and climate change. Sharks are especially vulnerable to these threats due to sharks' slow-growth rates, late age of maturity, long gestation periods and low reproductive output.

One way to improve sharks' image would be to balance the coverage. Examples of positive articles include highlighting the rarity of attacks, discussing preventive measures water users can take to reduce vulnerability to attacks, and discuss conservation issues related to local and threatened species of sharks, Gore said.
