Stretchable batteries are here! Power to the bendy electronics

The next frontier in electronics are the flexible, stretchable kind. Yes, that means a rubber, bouncy smartphone (eventually), but it also means heart monitors threaded into cardiac tissue. For devices like that to work, they require flexible, stretchable batteries. And such batteries are here, according to researchers who just published their work.

Yonggang Huang, an engineer at Northwestern University, created the battery with materials wizard John Rogers at the University of Illinois, who received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2011 for his work on flexible electronics designed for integration with the human body.

How much give and take does the invention allow? ?We can stretch the device a great deal ? up to about 300 percent ? and still have a working battery,? Huang noted. (Please don't try that with your smartphone's battery.)

?Such stretchable batteries enable true integration with stretchable electronics in a small package,? Huang told NBC News in an email.

The background of the research team means that medical applications will be primarily targeted, but there are other applications for bendy batteries such as wearable solar cells and electric-eye cameras that make studio-quality photographs.

The flexible lithium-ion battery reported today in the journal Nature Communications completes the flexible electronics package with a cordless power source. When the battery runs out of juice after about eight hours, it is recharged wirelessly.

To make the battery, the researchers start with tiny, individual, rigid battery storage components arranged next to each other. The bendy and stretchy characteristics stem from tightly packed, wavy wires that connect these components.

?When we stretch the battery, the wavy interconnects unravels, much like yarn unspooling, while the storage components almost keep undeformed, because of their much larger rigidity than the interconnects? Huang explained.

The breakthrough was demonstrated with a light emitting diode that continues to work when stretched, folded and twisted on a human elbow. It continued to work well through 20 recharge cycles.

Nigerian militants threaten to kill French hostages

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? A video posted online Monday apparently shows seven French hostages kidnapped from northern Cameroon, with a masked militant claiming the radical Islamic group Boko Haram from neighboring Nigeria holds them.

The video, posted to YouTube and mentioned on a jihadist website, shows one of two French men reading a statement, with a woman in between them. Four children sit on the ground near them, flanked by two masked militants wearing camouflage uniforms and holding rifles.

A masked militant in front says in the video that Boko Haram kidnapped the French hostages, a family of three adults and four children who were taken from outside a national park in Cameroon's Far North Region on Feb. 19. A black banner in the background, bearing the images of the Quran flanked by two Kalashnikov assault rifles, also resembles a symbol previously used by Boko Haram.

The man says the kidnappings came due to the French military intervention in northern Mali, where its troops have fought with Malian soldiers against Islamic extremists who took over the north in the months following a coup last year. The man also threatens the Nigerian and Cameroonian government, calling on them to release their imprisoned members.

"Let the French president know that he has launched war against Islam and we are fighting him everywhere," the man says in Arabic. "Let him know that we are spread everywhere to save our brothers."

The man threatens to kill the French hostages if group's demands are not met.

The Associated Press could not immediately confirm the video's authenticity Monday, though it shares similarities with some Boko Haram propaganda videos published in the past.

However, in this video, the man speaks entirely in Arabic, while other Boko Haram videos have its leader Abubakar Shekau also speaking the Hausa language of Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. Boko Haram has not published a video featuring hostages before. The video appears to have been filmed outside, as prayer mats hung in the background sway in a breeze.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in a statement that "for us, these images are horribly shocking. They show cruelty without limits." He said France is fully mobilized to free the hostages but "verifications needed in these circumstances" are under way.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault of France told journalists his country's intelligence services are analyzing the video and "examining the nature of the demands."

The French gas group GDF Suez last week identified the captives as an employee working in Yaounde, the Cameroon capital, and his family. The group was vacationing in the north, a company statement said without elaborating. Cameroonian and Nigerian soldiers continue to search for them in the arid, rural border region the two countries share in West Africa.

Waza Park, a natural wildlife reserve in Cameroon's Far North Region attracts mainly foreign tourists. But the area often suffers from raids by bandits lurking in Cameroon, Chad and neighboring Nigeria, who abduct locals for ransom. A local witness told the AP he saw gunmen on motorcycles abduct the tourists on Feb. 19.

Boko Haram ? which means "Western education is sacrilege" ? has launched a guerrilla campaign of bombings and shootings across Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north. It is blamed for at least 792 killings last year alone, according to an AP count. It is known to have ties to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, an Algerian-based group that opened a front in Mali.

The sect, which typically speaks to journalists in telephone conference calls at times of its choosing, could not be immediately reached for comment Monday.

Boko Haram remains highly fragmented, without a clear command-and-control structure. One splinter organization launched from Boko Haram appears to be Ansaru, which has claimed the recent north Nigeria kidnappings of a British citizen, a Greek, an Italian, three Lebanese and one Filipino, all employees of a Lebanese construction company called Setraco. The group earlier claimed the kidnapping in December of a French national working on a renewal energy project in Nigeria's northern Katsina state.

However, the video claiming the kidnapping comes after supposed Boko Haram leaders denied this weekend that they took part in the kidnapping of the seven French citizens ? leading to more questions about who actually remains in control of the group. Shekau hasn't been seen in a video since late November.

A total of 15 French citizens are currently being held in western Africa. In addition to the seven kidnapped in Cameroon, there is one other in Nigeria and seven thought to be in northern Mali.

Facebook to put old, rarely viewed photos into 'cold storage'

If a photo is on Facebook and no one looks at it, was it ever even uploaded?

Poor attempt at a joke aside, there's something with which we need to come to terms: There are a lot of photos on Facebook that just sit around, taking up precious data storage space. The social network can't exactly delete these photos just because no one's looking, but it can store them in a more cost-effective and energy-efficient way.

According to the Oregonian's Mike Rogoway, Facebook's testing moving what he describes as "archival posts that people don?t need every day" into cold storagein the social network's data center inPrineville, Oregon.

As fun as it might be to imagine a gigantic meatlocker full of servers, cold storage refers to a data center in which most of the computers are asleep, with a few keeping watch ? and able to wake the others ? for incoming requests to view older items. Compare that to a hot storage data center in which all the computers are wide-awake and ready to show you the information you request almost instantly. (Of course, the difference in the time it takes to grab something from cold storage versus the time it takes to grab something from hot storage is so slight that a typical user could never even tell the difference. Think second or millisecond delays, rather than anything more dramatic.)

Facebook says, according to Rogoway, that "82 percent of its traffic is focused on just 8 percent of its photos." Given that detail, it's not exactly tough to understand why the company's considering cold storage data centers ? especially since they will cost the social network about a third less than standard data centers, offer eight times more storage, and run five times more energy efficiently.

Visualized: Arduino Uno shows up in NASA's Swamp Works facility

Image

There are certain things you'd expect to encounter on a visit to NASA's Swamp Works research facility. Walking into the former Apollo testing facility, you'll almost certainly catch glimpses of martian rovers, soil samples and an assortment of scientific testing devices. But in spite of Arduino's near ubiquity these days, we'll admit that we were a bit taken aback when the familiar blue microcontroller made an appearance on a lab desk during our conversation with NASA "lighting guy," Dr. Eirik Holbert. It seems that NASA, like pretty much everyone else, is experimenting with the hacker-friendly component.

The board was hooked up to a lighting fixture Holbert is working on as part of NASA's upcoming deep space habitat concept generator. It's an attempt to bring some sunlit consistency to space exploration, simulating Earth-like lighting patterns to help keep the crew alert and get them ready for sleep in the evenings. So, where does NASA turn when it's looking to conserve weight and save some taxpayer money in the process? Toward the Arduino Uno, naturally. Holbert assembled a number of off-the-shelf products, including the aforementioned microcontroller and shields from Sparkfun to make a fixture for under $500.

Asked whether we might be seeing an Arduino setup like this on an upcoming mission, Dr. Holbert told us, "I'm all about interchangeability. If they can make something space compatible, I'd be all for it."

Denver parks shuts down sports fields through April 1 due to drought

(John Leyba, Denver Post file)

A prolonged drought is forcing Denver Parks and Recreation to close its grass sports fields for soccer and lacrosse until April 1 ? which will keep thousands of children and adults from playing their sports.

The news of the closure came only 15 days before the start of the spring season for most teams.

"Disappointing," said Aaron Nagle, executive director of Skyline Soccer Association, which has about 3,000 players ages 3-18. "We had the same conditions last year. I said we need to prepare. Then 15 days before we are supposed to start, this e-mail goes out."

Nagle sent e-mails to members of his organization, asking them to contact City Hall and push for a short-term solution for this season and to come up

with a long-term plan to deal with drought conditions.

City officials, who say the fields are too vulnerable after more than a year of drought conditions, on Friday sent out an e-mail to notify organizations that fields in 80 to 100 parks will be shut down. Fields for baseball and softball will open March 18 ? but not for soccer and other field sports.

"We don't have a lot of moisture," said parks spokesman Jeff Green. "(Wednesday) night's snow helped, but we will need more. If we were to let a lot of activity start up, the fields are going to get torn up and the grass will disintegrate. It jeopardizes keeping the fields open for the remainder of the season."

Denver officials sought the opinion of Prescription Root Zone, an international sports turf consulting company based in Colorado Springs. The firm's president advised the city to close the fields to allow the grass that has been dormant during winter to restore itself.

"If play is allowed on the drought-dormant grasses, the turf will be completely destroyed, and there is not enough sod in this region to replace all that would be destroyed nor the money it would take to do so," said Larry D. Musser in a Feb. 14 letter to the city.

Musser said allowing soccer to be played on the field would be "a disaster waiting to happen."

The city's golf courses are not being closed, but that could change, Green said.

"We have considered closing golf courses on rotating basis. But we are not seeing a tremendous overuse that we couldn't repair," he said.

The parks department will begin posting signs with closure information in the parks and at the fields. The closed areas will be monitored by city staff and rangers through April 1.

A message sent to sports organizations said groups that are found practicing or playing on the fields will be warned or issued citations and asked to leave the field.

The city is also delaying sending invoices to groups that have requested to use the fields for the summer. City officials will monitor the grass and moisture content daily. If conditions don't improve, the fields could be closed beyond April 1, Green said.

"March is typically our snowiest month," he said. "We are hoping that will help things."

Public Schools, which has 362 acres of irrigated playgrounds and sports fields that normally consume 400 million gallons of water a year, is examining whether to shut down access to its fields. District officials will meet with Denver Water to figure out the next steps, but at this point, the district's fields are still open for the spring.

Ian Olson, who coaches his second-grade daughter's team, the Cobras, said he was planning to start practices Monday.

"I understand that the drought is impactful," he said, "but to close down the entire parks system because they are afraid of the fields getting torn up, ... you would think that they would have had a plan in place to mitigate for a shortage of water."

Bernie Woessner, whose sons have been playing soccer for Skyline for about seven years, said he wishes the parks department would help work out a solution. Now, kids in suburban communities will have access to fields, putting Denver's teams at a disadvantage.

Ultimately, he said, if the season gets canceled, a nearly 50-year-old nonprofit organization such as Skyline would have to refund all of its players their entry fees and it may not be able to survive.

"I think they could be flexible to make it work, by alternating fields," he said. "It's pretty disappointing for them to shut it down with no cooperation to figure out a solution."

(AP) ? Many of the fashions displayed on the Milan runway Thursday had a yesteryear appeal ? but with a contemporary edge.

Coats are a mainstay for next winter, many of them oversized with accentuated cuffs ? part of a trend toward architectural references in clothing. Fur coats and jackets make the biggest comeback in many a season, perhaps appealing to new markets in cold weather climates, and certainly fitting for the snowy Milan weather.

Many of the styles, from the flared skirts to belted suits, recalled couture favorites from earlier fashion eras. However, the styles were updated by paring down the silhouette and using coarse fabric for elegant wear that in the past has been associated with silkier materials.

Spandex gave a modern glint to looks, including form-fitting dresses, jumpsuits and turtleneck tops, which were softened with sewing details or by coupling them with softer materials like fur and cashmere. For romantic looks, there was lace paired with leather or animal prints for a new twist. Gold lame and sequins add luxury to sensual evening wear.

The palette featured a lot of blues, green, red, some white and flashes of yellow along with mainstay black.

Hardy, practical shoes were a mainstay, but designers aren't neglecting pretty looks and are still coming up with sandals, pumps and feminine slippers and booties.

Bags tend to be large, but not huge, and no few have a Mary Poppins practicality.

PRADA

The Prada finale was a long luxurious mink coat with ample collar and cuff like the ones the Hollywood divas used to wear in the 1950s. Underneath the model wore a sheer see-through silk dress.

It was only the showiest item of the winter collection presented Thursday evening, based on yesteryear luxury, from the opulent coats to the gilded gowns to the mink wraps.

Miuccia Prada season after season has a fashion vision, and follows it through regardless. This round she revisits vintage couture in a contemporary context.

Coats have extra wide cuffs and are often belted at the waist and flared toward the bottom. Skirts come in wide ballerina styles, as do some the dresses. The jumper dress is another 1950s look, which Prada revisits, even for evening, not to mention the many coat dresses in the collection.

Totally Prada, and anything but retro, was the uneven hemline (one side much longer than the other) that the designer used for daytime belted sheaths as well as gilded, belted gowns.

Fabrics ranged from coarse tweeds to shimmering metallic materials, plus leather and fur. Crocodile takes on new importance when used not only for bags, but also for skirts and even a suit.

The latest Prada shoe, either a sandal or a bootie, has a thick high heel, but a heavy rubber sole.

The sides of the voluminous bags in tweed and leather, including crocodile, were folded in such a way to give the impression of a feline face, perhaps inspired by a video of a cat that was part of the background of the show.

FENDI

Fendi is to fur what Ferrari is to cars. Yet given current concerns about animal rights, the brand has moved from the lavish fur coats that were all the rage in the 1980s to a more discreet way of interpreting fur as fashion.

Fendi creative director Silvia Venturini, daughter of one of the company's five founding sisters, opted for wisps of fur used as hair decorations, bracelets, or charms hanging from Fendi bags.

Fur also appeared as inserts in a skirt or a dress, or sheered and fashioned into a cozy, but not showy, jacket. Long fur, usually goat, also seen on other runways during Milan's preview showings, was used to make up a skirt or a cape.

For decades, German born designer Karl Lagerfeld has been working with Fendi, adding his flamboyant designing talent to their creative genius.

This round he offered a constructed slim silhouette, with accentuated shoulders and a knee-length hemline. The look is sophisticated rather than sexy and used deep, dark shades of red and blue, which along with black are becoming the staple colors for next winter.

In the accessory department, Fendi chose to reinvent its iconic handbags, from the clutch bag ? this time furry ? to a modern version of the Mary Poppins bag.

The shoes are sure to be a winter hit. Whether a pump, a boot or a lace-up, each pair was elaborately decorated, some in fur, and comes with a pointed toe and a glistening mirrored high heel.

BLUGIRL

Blugirl has looks for women feeling both demure and daring at the same time ? mixing traditional tartan, peek-a-boo lace and bold leopard prints.

The women's wear collection for next winter, took as its muse the British style icon Alexa Chung. The label described Chung's style as "midway between tradition and urban accents, ultra-cosmopolitan, always cool."

Designer Anna Molinari's collection started off with a preppy coed look: green, red and navy plaid skirts, sometimes pleated, or pencil pants paired with oversized green sweaters, pullovers or cardigans. Shoes were leather ankle boots, worn with short, dark socks.

The outfits transitioned into more feminine territory. A tartan-printed taffeta bubble skirts paired was with a ruffle-neck lace shirt and topped with a loose-fitting leopard-print jacket, leading off an array of looks combining plaid, lace and leopard. Here the preferred shoe was the pump.

The collection finished with a flash of gold, with sequined evening dresses and skirts.

Dragon and swan motifs gave a nod to Chung's British-Chinese heritage. Commanding dragon shaped necklaces and Chinese-style jackets offered Asian flair, while sequined kissing swans on evening wear were reminiscent of an English park.

The looks were finished with small shoulder bags in leopard print, tartan or sequins, strapped across the body for the stylish girl-on-the-go.

MAX MARA

The German Bauhaus design school gave a sophisticated clientele functional yet elegant design in everyday objects, like chairs and teapots, as well as living and working spaces. On the runway in Milan, Max Mara struck the same note of functional elegance in its Bauhaus-inspired women's wear show.

The collection for next winter was, fittingly, highly structured.

The coats alone were a feat of layered and textural complexity. A hooded overcoat, worn open over the shoulders with empty sleeves hanging, accompanied another interior jacket with a nubby texture.

Often, the overcoat sleeves were rolled up to reveal another layer of, say, spandex, which contrasted with the satiny coat lining. Leather patches emphasized rounded shoulders.

Max Mara's heritage of practical luxury was highlighted by its focus on new camel fabrics for their coats, including spun alpaca and mouflon wool. From super-functional camel, the color palette then progressed to a deep yellow and onward to decidedly urban shades of gray, black and midnight blue ? a nod to the Bauhaus inspiration.

The silhouette ranged from skinny pencil skirts paired with long sweaters for the office or loose-fitting pajama pants for relaxed afternoons. Shoes emphasized comfort ? sneakers ? but were built from luxury materials like suede and leather. Boston bags were made from leather and crocodile prints.

DSQUARED2

Both the masculine and feminine sides of the DSquared2 label were shouting over each other for attention.

The collection for next winter featured over-the-top masculine tailoring balanced with oversized jewels.

For daytime, the look was gangster chic, with loose-fitting men's double-breasted suits worn with nothing more than a dickey underneath and topped with exaggerated bowler hats ? pink with purple ribbon. Pencil skirts paired with belted jackets, one with layered, architectural lapels.

But for nighttime, the mood was more speak easy slinky with silky dresses with an asymmetrical, trailing feather boa hemline or a fur stole ? a favorite on Milan runways this season.

Designing twins Dean and Dan Caten showed at night for the first time in a while, giving up their closing day slot.

JUST CAVALLI

Designer Roberto Cavalli drew inspiration for his second line "Just Cavalli" collection, from a recent trip to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, at the foot of the Himalayas.

"Riches there are measured by the values of happiness," the designer said ahead of the show, which had an ethnic, almost hippie feel to it.

Almost the entire collection came in subdued native prints, fashioned in anything from tunics over pants to colorful evening gowns. Accessories included long silk necklaces like the ones worn by the Bhutan nobility, and a backpack to replace the more urban handbag.

Many designers are featuring fur this round of preview shows, including Cavalli who used it mainly to trim the hoods of his winter parkas. That was enough to draw the wrath of a small group of animal rights activists who disrupted the show holding up signs in Italian saying, "Your fashion is our death," until they were forcibly removed.

Florida Atlantic Football Joins The Prison-Industrial Complex

I'm fairly positive that this will wind up on the Non-Sports board before the day is out, but since it's football, I'll start it here.

Link here

Florida Atlantic University has sold its naming rights to its (heretofore unnamed) stadium to The Geo Group, one of the world's largest operators of detention centers and for-profit prisons.

Their largest sources of income are U.S. state and federal prisons, and detention centers for illegal immigrants: both of which have come under criticism for alleged violations of civil liberties and human rights. The CEO of Geo Group holds bachelor's and master's degrees from FAU.

The terms of the agreement and the stadium's official name are still unknown, but FAU will receive about $5 million over the length of the deal.

Nothing official, but rumor has it that they'll (unofficially) call the stadium Owl-Catraz.

Clive Davis fires back after Kelly Clarkson slam

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

Thanks to Kelly Clarkson, the soundtrack to Clive Davis' life is more discord than harmony these days.

With the release this week of his memoir, "The Soundtrack of My Life," the legendary music mogul made headlines for revealing, among other things, that he is bisexual and clashed with his "American Idol" prot?g?.

Davis claims in the tell-all that Clarkson "burst into hysterical sobbing" after first hearing her hit songs "Since U Been Gone" and "Behind These Hazel Eyes" and fought to cut them from her 2004 album, "Breakaway."

"It was a very tough conversation, and it didn't get any easier when Kelly burst into hysterical sobbing," he writes. "We all just sat there and she cried for a several minutes."

Clarkson -- who recently earned rave reviews for her not-lip-synched performance??of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" at the recent presidential inauguration -- remembers their dispute very differently, and slammed the record producer Tuesday for "spreading false information" about her and her music.

"I refuse to be bullied and I just have to clear up his memory lapses and misinformation for myself and for my fans," she wrote on WhoSay.

"It feels like a violation. Growing up is awesome because you learn you don't have to cower to anyone -- even Clive Davis."

Clarkson acknowledged that she "did cry in his office once," but it was in response to his censure of her autobiographical song "Because of You."

"I cried because he hated it and told me verbatim that I was a 's----- writer who should be grateful for the gifts that he bestows upon me.' ? This was devastating coming from a man who I, as a young girl, considered a musical hero and was so honored to work with."

"(He) belittled me and my music and completely sabotaged ('My December')," she added about Davis' response to her third album.

"It never had a chance to reach (its) full potential ... the fact that I was so completely disregarded and disrespected was so disheartening," she wrote.

Davis fired back Tuesday, insisting that he told the truth in his account of their "creative differences":

"I am truly very sorry that she has decided to take issue with what I know to be an accurate depiction of our time together," he tweeted. "Before the book was published, I had every fact checked with five independent individuals who were present on a daily basis throughout it all. The chapter as it is written was thoroughly verified by each and every one of them. I stand by the chapter as written in my book."

Still, the 80-year-old music executive continued to praise Clarkson as a "tremendous vocal talent and performer." ?

"I wish, and will always wish, Kelly's talent and her career to soar to ever new heights," he concluded.

Latest updates, rumors leading into NBA trade deadline

Josh Smith

Josh Smith has spent his entire eight-year career with the Hawks. (Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Deadline day has finally arrived. NBA teams have until Thursday at 3 p.m. ET to complete trades for the stretch run of the season. The Point Forward will be here all day providing the latest news, rumors and analysis. Refresh this page often for updates, and be sure to check back late today for our deadline winners and losers and more reaction to the deals that were made and not made.

2:32 p.m.: Warriors to stand pat

Despite earlier discussions regarding back-up big man Jeremy Tyler, the Warriors will not make any moves, reports Yahoo! Sports? Marc Spears.

2:08 p.m.: Smith talks continue

The Bucks and Hawks are still discussing a possible trade for Josh Smith, reports?Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.?Wojnarowski reported earlier in the day that?Monta Ellis and Ekpe Udoh were among players discussed for Smith, Devin Harris.

USA Today Sports? Sam Amick confirms?Wojnarowski?s report and adds that the Suns aren?t expected to land Smith.

NBA.com?s David Aldridge notes that the Nets are in talks, but that the Bucks appear to be the favorites.

2:03 p.m.: Toronto acquires Telfair

The Raptors got the guard they needed, acquiring Sebastian Telfair from the Suns in exchange for?Hamed Haddadi and a second-round pick, reports ESPN.com?s Chris Broussard.

Rob Mahoney?s take:

This was a natural move given that rookie guard Kendall Marshall had recently overtaken Telfair for back-up point guard duties in Phoenix. Telfair had a quietly dependable season for the Suns last year, but has seen his play regress along with the general quality of Phoenix?s roster this season. That ? along with his $1.6 million expiring deal ? made him imminently tradable, and it just so happened that the Raptors were in the market for an extra ball-handler after dealing away steady playmaker Jose Calderon. Telfair doesn?t exactly fill that void, but he?ll lift the burden from an overextended John Lucas III and round out Toronto?s bench for the year.

1:58 p.m.: Nuggets not expected to make a deal

The Nuggets had been shopping third-string center?Timofey Mozgov, who was acquired in the deal for Carmelo Anthony in 2011, but CBSSports.com?s Ken Berger reports that the team will stand pat the deadline.

1:48 p.m.: Heat send Pittman to Grizzlies

The Heat have traded back-up center Dexter Pittman to the Grizzlies for a second-round pick and a trade exception, reports Yahoo! Sports? Marc Spears.

1:45 p.m.: First deal of the day

We have the first deal of the day. According to NBA.com?s David Aldridge, Jordan Crawford has been traded to the Celtics.?Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Wizards will?receive?Leandro Barbosa, and his expiring contract in return.

Rob Mahoney?s take:

As much as I understand the Wizards wanting to unload Jordan Crawford, I?m not grasping what about him is so rotten that they would just give him away. Crawford is owed a paltry $1.2 million this season and $2.2 million next year, after which Washington could have decided whether he was worth fighting for in restricted free agency (hint: he?s not). In the meantime, the Wizards would have a shot-happy bench player whom they could choose to use or not. Instead, they?ll have the expiring contract of a player who has been ruled out for the season, a marginally decreased payroll and the same nonexistent amount of cap room they had previously. The sole gain here is a more permanent cure for Crawford-induced headaches, but is ditching an asset ? even a marginal one ? really so preferable to buying some extra Tylenol?

1:28 p.m.: Smith claims he didn?t ask for the max

The Josh Smith trade saga has been months in the making, but the rumors really started to pick up after Smith claimed he was worth a max contract as a free agent this summer. But Smith is now claiming he never asked for the max, per NBA.com?s Sekou Smith.

Sekou further quotes Josh Smith in saying that??Atlanta will be on my list in free agency.? With no trades on the immediate horizon, it appears the Hawks forward is keeping all his options open.

1:20 p.m.: C?s, Wiz talking Melo for Crawford

The Wizards have been shopping Jordan Crawford all day, and they might finally have a buyer in the Celtics, says Yahoo! Sports? Adrian Wojnarowski.

1:10 p.m.: CBA impacting deadline

The forthcoming luxury tax restrictions are casting a large shadow over the trade deadline, according to several reports.

Rob Mahoney?s take:

The revised collective bargaining agreement can?t stop the truly committed teams from piling up salary, but it does make the luxury tax threshold ? which many teams around the league are over or nearing ? a bit more fearsome. Tax-paying teams are hindered in the offseason, as tools like the mid-level exception and the sign-and-trade now come with a hitch for those that cross a certain line in terms of overall salary. But even more gruesome is the ?repeater tax,? a compounding penalty that applies to teams that fall above the tax line in three out of four consecutive seasons. The repeater tax won?t actually be levied until 2014-15, but this season is still in play as teams grow wary of that ?three-out-of-four? criteria, effectively deterring borderline teams from making moves that would put them over the tax line.

On a related note, this could also serve to explain why draft picks are being clutched a bit more tightly at this year?s deadline, despite the fact that some of the picks in play are reportedly in the late 20s. With teams around the league more cost-conscious than ever, the notion of picking up a potential role player on a rookie-scale deal is an incredibly attractive one ? even if selecting in that range in the draft rarely produces star-level NBA talent.

1:05 p.m.: Clippers unlikely to shake it up

The Clippers were one of the more active teams in the weeks leading up to the deadline, but reports now say they?re unlikely to make a move before 3 p.m. ET.

Rob Mahoney?s take:

Precious few teams are able to boast the record and synergy of the Clippers, who have spent large chunks of the season playing at league-best levels. There are surely deals out there if they decided to move Eric Bledsoe or DeAndre Jordan, but for the moment both are important elements of L.A.?s rotation and valued assets for a team rife with aging veterans.

1:00 p.m.: Redick staying in Orlando?

The field for J.J. Redick has been narrowing all afternoon, and now Ken Berger of CBSSports.com says there?s a strong possibility Redick stays in Orlando.

12:46 p.m.: Deals that won?t happen

Much of the focus today is on the guys who will be traded, but several reports have emerged on guys who will be staying put, most importantly Monta Ellis, who CBSSports.com?s Ken Berger says is ?unlikely? to be moved in a deal for Josh Smith.

12:37 p.m.: Hawks to hold on to Smith?

Reports indicated that the Hawks were intent on dealing Josh Smith before the 3 p.m. ET deadline, but ESPN.com?s Chris Broussard is hearing that the probability of a Smith deal has declined.

The Nets still believe they?re in the running for Smith?s services, says the New York Daily News? Stefan Bondy.

12:32 p.m.: Spurs fall out of Redick derby

The stars seemed to be aligning for a J.J. Redick-to-San Antonio trade, but Yahoo! Sports??Adrian Wojnarowski says the Spurs have fallen out of the race for the sharpshooter.

Judging by earlier reports, that would leave the Sixers, Pacers and Bucks as potential Redick suitors. But Sam Amick of USA Today Sports says don?t rule out Redick staying in Orlando.

12:20 p.m.: Wizards? Crawford drawing interest

The Wizards seem unlikely to make the postseason, but that reportedly won?t keep them from dealing. According to a report from USA Today Sports? Jeff Zillgitt, Washington is discussing guard Jordan Crawford with several teams.

Rob Mahoney?s take:

Jordan Crawford is a non-essential piece for a Washington team that already has its core prospects in John Wall and Bradley Beal, while Dallas and Boston both make sense as trade partners looking to add younger pieces at minimal cost. Crawford is primarily a volume scorer at this point, averaging 18.1 points on?16.2 field goal attempts?per 36 minutes. Both the Mavs and Celtics are undoubtedly well aware of this, and would be banking on the potential to reform some of Crawford?s worrisome offensive habits in order to make him a more helpful player.

12:13 p.m.: Race for Redick narrowing

We outlined the potential suitors for J.J. Redick below, but according to several reports, that list is getting shorter.

Going off earlier reports, that leaves the Spurs, Sixers and Pacers as contenders for Redick?s services. Yahoo! Sports? Adrian Wojnarowski, who reported earlier that the Spurs are legitimately in on Redick, further connected the dots with this tweet:

12:04 p.m.: Smith or bust for Nets

The Nets have been linked with several players this month, but according to a report from Yahoo! Sports??Adrian Wojnarowski if the Nets can?t land Josh Smith, then they?re likely to stand pat.

12:00 p.m.: Rockets won?t flip Robinson

There were rumblings that the Rockets acquired Thomas Robinson from the Kings in advance of another deal, but NBA.com?s David Aldridge is hearing that Houston ?loves? him and won?t be trading him.

11:49 a.m.: Kings won?t deal Evans, Cousins

Despite reported interest from the Celtics, the Kings have no intention of moving Tyreke Evans or DeMarcus Cousins, reports Yahoo! Sports? Marc Spears.

Evans, 23, was the 2010 Rookie of the Year; Cousins, 22, was the No. 5 pick in the 2010 draft. Though Evans will be a restricted free agent this offseason, the pair are expected to serve as the foundation for a Kings team in transition. A Seattle group is expected to purchase and move the Kings to Seattle at the beginning of next season.

11:37 a.m.: Kings? Evans on the move?

The Kings have already made one surprising move this week. Could another be forthcoming? According to a report from ESPN.com?s Marc Stein, the Celtics are actively pursuing the Kings? Tyreke Evans, the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Shortly after that tweet, however, Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reported that Evans would not be moved by Sacramento.

11:24 a.m.: Spurs legitimately in on Redick

Several teams are chasing Magic sharpshooter J.J. Redick, but the Spurs could be emerging as a serious threat to land him, says Yahoo! Sports??Adrian Wojnarowski.

Rob Mahoney?s take:

The Spurs don?t have any pressing need for another perimeter shooter, but why miss out on a viable fit who is very much attainable? J.J. Redick, Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green would set up the Spurs with a fantastic core of role players to rotate in alongside Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, and the acquisition of Redick?s Bird rights would give San Antonio a good shot at re-signing him for the long haul. San Antonio is still an unlikely landing spot given the poor value of their first-round pick and minimal trade assets, but the team would be a great fit for Redick.

11:17 a.m.: Knicks to stand pat?

According to reports, the Knicks are likely to stay quiet at the deadline, meaning no trade of Iman Shumpert, who was the subject of rumors earlier this month. But ESPNNewYork?s Ian Begley says the Knicks could still make a move, just not a trade.

10:50 a.m.: Phoenix, Milwaukee emerging as Smith favorites?

We outlined the Bucks? interest in Josh Smith below. The latest report from Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski?suggests they aren?t the only ones involved, though.

ESPN.com?s Chris Broussard says that, contrary to prior reports, Monta Ellis will not be involved.

10:41 a.m.: Redick rumors

Impending free agent J.J. Redick has generated plenty of interest in the weeks leading up to the deadline, and he remains a hot commodity according to several reports.

Reports out of Orlando suggest that the rebuilding Magic wil look to deal the sharpshooter .

Rob Mahoney?s take:

It?s not at all surprising that there?s an extensive market for Redick, who works well playing any style and fits on just about any roster. He?s a low-maintenance offensive piece that?s efficient with his touches, and can immediately help to space the floor as he picks up the schematic basics of a new team. He?s also a much better defender than most understand. He?s not a star, but he?s an ideal role-playing wing with no salary obligations beyond this season.

10:16 a.m.: Bucks continue to push for Smith

The Bucks have been linked to Josh Smith over the last few days, and, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of?Yahoo! Sports, the Hawks and Bucks are now ?seriously? negotiating.

Ben Golliver broken down the cons of a Milwaukee trade yesterday: ?The Hawks would ideally find a way to get an additional younger asset and/or pick(s) in a Smith deal. Ellis? shooting inefficiency cuts deeply into his value as a player and he?s not a long-term fit in Atlanta with Lou Williams already in the fold (although he?s currently injured).?

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com also reports that the Bucks are in on Smith, which could lead to another move as well.

9:55 a.m.: Guards on the move

Several guards could be on the move prior to the 3 p.m. ET deadline.

? In need of another ball-handler, the Raptors have emerged as the favorite for Sebastian Telfair, according to Yahoo! Sports? Adrian Wojnarowski.

? The Mavs have been reluctant to add future salary but are reportedly interested in the Bucks? Beno Udrih, who has a $7.3 million expiring contract, reports ESPN.com?s Marc Stein.

? One guard who might not be on the move: Ben Gordon. CBSSports.com?s Ken Berger reports that the Nets have ?pulled the plug? on talks for Gordon.

? The Pacers are shopping D.J. Augustin, according to Yahoo! Sports??Adrian Wojnarowski.

9:20 a.m.: Smith to Rockets?

The Rockets aren?t done dealing, according to Ken Berger of CBSSports.com.

But Yahoo! Sports? Adrian?Wojnarowski says the price for Smith, the most-high profile piece currently on the block, is too high right now.

Rob Mahoney?s take:?

Houston is certainly the most intriguing destination for Smith still in play. The Rockets provide the most natural fit for Smith and have the potential to furnish the Hawks with good, cheap assets. Atlanta seems to be looking to get a return on Smith without compromising its future cap space, and Houston could offer some combination of the newly acquired Thomas Robinson (who can be flipped immediately because the Rockets are under the salary cap), Donatas Motiejunas, Terrence Jones and Royce White ? all of whom are in the first year of their rookie deals.

That said, Houston?s cap space puts GM Daryl Morey in a unique negotiating position. The Rockets will have a chance to make a run at Smith in free agency, and thus Morey can drive as hard a bargain as he pleases. If they land Smith, then they?ll have an upper hand in their attempts to re-sign him this summer via Bird rights. If not, then the Rockets? season goes on, and they?ll circle back to Smith in a few months.

9 a.m.: Deadline storylines to watch

The ever-active Rockets made the first moves of deadline week on Wednesday night, acquiring Thomas Robinson from the Kings in a six-player deal and sending Marcus Morris to Phoenix for a second-round pick. What?s in store for Thursday? Here are some key questions that will shape deadline day:

? Where will Josh Smith land? The Hawks are committed to dealing the soon-to-be free-agent forward, as SI.com?s Chris Mannix reported. But ESPN.com reported early Thursday that the Hawks were struggling to find a deal they liked for the 27-year-old, who believes he deserves a max contract this summer. Brooklyn, Boston and Milwaukee have been among the teams linked to Smith. CBSSports.com reported that Smith would be open to re-signing with Milwaukee if traded there. (Meanwhile, the Bucks are not dealing Brandon Jennings, according to ESPN.com.)

? What will the Celtics do? Boston reportedly told Rajon Rondo that he won?t be traded, but the Celtics have been active exploring their options amid season-ending injuries to Rondo, Jared Sullinger and Leandro Barbosa. Yahoo! Sports reported that the Celtics and Nets discussed a deal for Paul Pierce, while Boston and the Clippers have had talks about Kevin Garnett, who must give his consent to be traded. Here?s how Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald characterized the Celtics-Clippers situation:

Sources were saying again [Wednesday] that while no hard bargaining has taken place, the Clips are aware it would cost them Eric Bledsoe and DeAndre Jordan to get Garnett and a greater chance at the 2013 NBA championship.

? Will Utah deal a big man? Jazz starters Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap will be free agents in July, and Utah has young, promising big men Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter played behind the two vets. Many around the league have long anticipated that at least one of Jefferson or Millsap would be dealt this season, but the Jazz have won 12 of 17 and are a half-game behind Golden State for sixth in the Western Conference.

? What happens with J.J. Redick? The Magic shooting guard, in the midst of a career year, will be a free agent in July. Several teams are reportedly interested, from championship-contending San Antonio to playoff-contending Milwaukee to lottery-bound Minnesota. Orlando is said to be looking for a first-round pick as part of a package for Redick, who is making $6.2 million.

? Will the Lakers do something big? Short answer: No. At least that?s the word from GM Mitch Kupchak, who is on record saying the team won?t be trading Dwight Howard or Pau Gasol before the deadline.

8:45 a.m.: Deadline primer

To get you ready for the deadline, here?s a look at SI.com?s recent trade coverage:

? Rob Mahoney examined the wish lists for the top teams in the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference and assessed the puzzle that is Monta Ellis, one of the names on the block.

? Ben Golliver separated fact from fiction and examined the possible destinations for Hawks forward Josh Smith.

? Here was the trade buzz from Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and early Thursday.

? Chris Mannix weighed in on the potential buyers and sellers.

? Ian Thomsen evaluated the development of Orlando shooting guard J.J. Redick, who has blossomed into a solid shooting guard and attractive trade chip.

? And here?s our look at some of the biggest in-season trades in NBA history.

Georgia Women Set NCAA, American Record at SEC Champs (With Splits)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, February 19. DURING the first night of action at the Southeastern Conference Championships, the foursome of Shannon Vreeland, Megan Romano, Jordan Mattern and Allison Schmitt cleared 6:53 in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay to lay claim to the NCAA and American record.

That foursome blasted the field with a sterling time of 6:52.64. That swim beat the NCAA record of 6:52.69 set by California's Sara Isakovic, Hannah Wilson, Liv Jensen and Dana Vollmer in 2009, and cleared the American record of 6:53.58 clocked by Morgan Scroggy, Chelsea Nauta, Melanie Margalis and Schmitt at the 2011 SEC Championships in Gainesville.

Vreeland ledoff with a blazing 1:43.38, while Romano clocked a 1:42.43. Mattern then turned in a 1:44.32 before three-time Olympic gold medalist Schmitt brought it home with a 1:42.51.

California could make a run at the record this year, but definitely will be next year when history's No. 1 high school recruit Missy Franklin shows up for the Golden Bears. She's already keeping an eye on the record.

Florida's Ellese Zalewski, Sinead Russell, Jamie Bohunicky and Elizabeth Beisel raced to second in the event with a school-record 6:65.63, while Tennessee's Mary Griffith, Kate McNeilis, Kelsey Floyd and Lindsay Gendron picked up a school record of their own with a 6:58.91 for third.

Earlier in the night, Tennessee's Lauren Solernou, Molly Hannis, Kelsey Flord and Faith Johnson clinched the women's 200-yard medley relay crown with a 1:35.08. Florida's Sinead Russell, Hilda Luthersdottir, Ellese Zalewski and Natalie Hinds tied Texas A&M's Tess Simpson, Breeja Larson, Paige Miller and Erica Dittmer for second with matching 1:35.96s.

Auburn's Kyle Owens, Stuart Ferguson, Marcelo Chierighini and James Disney-May snared the men's 200-yard medley relay title in 1:24.11, while Tennessee's Sam Rairden, Renato Prono, Oystein Hetland and Ed Walsh touched second in 1:24.53. Florida's Christian-aul Homer, Matt Elliott, Marcin Cieslak and Brad deBorde earned third in 1:25.64.

Florida's Pawel Werner, Sebastien Rousseau, Eduardo Solaeche Gomez and Marcin Cieslak hit the wall in 6:14.76 to crush the field in the men's 800 free relay. Tennessee's Sam Rairden, Gustav Aberg Ledjstrom, Tristan Slater and Sean Lehane placed second in 6:20.13. Auburn's Zane Grothe, Alex Hancock, Tommy McKee and James Disney-May wound up third in 6:22.22.

In diving competition, Georgia's Laura Ryan topped the three-meter event with a 361.80, while Tennessee's Jodie McGroarty (355.10) and Tori Lamp (345.35) finished second and third. For the men, Missouri's David Bonuchi won the men's one-meter event with 401.50 points. Kentucky's Greg Ferrucci placed second with 389.40 points, while LSU's Daniel Helm earned third-place honors with 372.10 points.

After day one for the men, Auburn is in the lead with 196 points, followed by LSU (156), Florida (147) and Tennessee (147). The Tennessee Lady Volunteers are in the lead for the women with 185 points, while LSU (151) and Georgia (151) are tied for second. Missouri (141) and Auburn (132) round out the top five.

PlayStation Evolution video reminds us about video games | Joystiq

With Sony taking care to refresh our memories on all its PlayStation hardware over the last few days, it has finally brought it all home with what really matters: Games. The video above highlights a few examples that stand out from the usual gaming crowd, including Gran Turismo, Flower, Journey, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Unfinished Swan and LittleBigPlanet.

Presumably, we'll quickly forget about all of these games ? perhaps even grow to hate them for their hilariously antiquated technologies ? after Sony's big PlayStation 2013 event tomorrow night, where the company is expected to unveil its next PlayStation.

Preclinical study shows potential of new technologies to detect response to cancer therapy earlier

Preclinical study shows potential of new technologies to detect response to cancer therapy earlier [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 20-Feb-2013

University of North Carolina Health Care

The research was published early in the January issue of the journal Technology in Cancer Research and Treatment. The article describes experiments using ultrasonic molecular imaging (USMI) and Dynamic Contrast Enhanced-Perfusion Imaging (DCE-PI) to measure response to therapy for pancreatic cancer.

Paul Dayton, PhD, senior author says, "What we found is that using two non-invasive technologies, we can detect response to therapy earlier than by relying on tumor volume changes. Having new non-invasive, inexpensive technologies available to measure response to therapy earlier during the course of treatment would be a significant advance in the ability to tailor a person's treatment to improve outcomes."

Dr. Dayton, an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, worked with Jen Jen Yeh, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Pharmacology, to evaluate the imaging technologies on human pancreatic cancer in a pre-clinical model. Both faculty are members of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

USMI has the ability to characterize non-invasively the biologic processes at the cellular and molecular levels. It does this through the use of targeted contrast agents, which are markers that bind to specific proteins expressed on cancer cells within the body. These contrast agents enable a standard ultrasound system to detect signals from cancer cells that would otherwise be undetectable.

Ultrasound DCE-PI is a method used to non-invasively monitor the blood flow in the microcirculation. Since growing tumors require abnormally increased blood flow, changes in blood vessel structure or density can provide information regarding tumor malignancy.

The team used a drug that inhibits a protein specific to tumors. They then used the imaging tools to measure the response of two different tumors, one known to respond to the drug therapy, and a second known not to respond. The results indicated that USMI was able to detect molecular signs of tumor response to therapy after only 2 days. A change in blood flow in the tumor was observed to detect response after day 14 using DCE-PI. Over the same period, standard volume measurements were not able to detect therapeutic response, and prior studies suggested that volume measurements do not become indicative of response until approximately 28 days. Thus, these methods showed a notable improvement in the early identification of tumor response to therapy, using contrast enhanced ultrasound imaging.

Although the contrast agents for USMI are not yet available in the United States, they are currently in clinical trials in Europe for cancer imaging.
