We're still in a holding pattern waiting for the NFL regular season to start and fall TV shows to premiere but luckily college football is here to save the day. College Football
While the pros -- a distinction that is getting fuzzier and fuzzier *cough* Miami *cough* -- get ready for their season to start college football teams will be getting back to it this weekend. UNLV and Wisconsin have the first high profile matchup of the year on ESPN (and ESPN 3D) Thursday night while Oregon and LSU play Saturday in a game that could have National Championship implications right away. We'll include some of the high profile national matchups on our schedule, but you can click here to find out where every nationally broadcast game will be on throughout the season -- we know how tough tracking Middle Tennessee can be.

The Hour
BBC America will air the third of six episodes of this drama on Wednesday night as it takes us behind the scenes of a 1950s TV news show featuring The Wire's Dominic West. While it's a period piece with plenty of sex, sexism and whiskey if you're looking for a Mad Men clone you'll likely be disappointed. The short story arc doesn't build Don Draper-like lead characters, but the Suez Crisis, spies and a suspicious death form a strong enough backdrop for us to sink our teeth into. If you're a fan of British TV we'd rate this one below the excellent Luther, but well above Law & Order: UK -- check out a trailer after the break.

Gold ? To Buy and Sell Ingots Or Coins? | Gold Price

Once I decided to invest in gold I faced the next question, should I buy and sell ingots or coins? a bullion coin is a coin struck from precious metal and retained as an investment, rather than used in day-to-day commerce. Bullion coins are usually available in gold and silver, with the exception of the South African Krugerrand and Switzerland?s Vreneli which are gold only. The American Eagle series is minted in gold, silver and platinum, and the Canadian Maple Leaf series is struck in gold, silver, platinum and also palladium.

Bullion coins are also typically available in various weights. These are usually multiples or fractions of 1 troy ounce, with a very few bullion coins minted, in extremely limited quantities, in kilograms (approx 2.2 pounds) and even heavier as special commemoratives.

Gold and silver are often seen as hedges or safe havens against inflation, political upheaval, social unrest, currency-based issues and economic downturn. Silver coins have become popular with collectors due to their relative low price compared to gold, and unlike most gold and platinum issues which are valued based upon the markets, silver coins are more often valued as collectables, sometimes far higher than their actual bullion value. Investors may also buy gold, silver, platinum, etc. during times of economic expansion for investment capital appreciation or to avoid inflationary impacts experienced with other investments.

Of all the precious metals, gold is the most popular as an investment.

Gold or silver, which were known to ancient civilizations, have a much longer history in financial markets than platinum. Platinum is relatively scarce even among the precious metals. As such, it tends to trade at higher per-unit prices than gold. Platinum is traded on the new York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and the London Platinum and Palladium Market. Generally this trade is in ingots and not coins.

The price of platinum closely follows its perceived supply and demand. During periods of sustained economic stability and growth, the price of platinum tends to be as much as twice the price of gold. since platinum has numerous commercial uses, such as with catalysts, during periods of economic decline, the price of platinum tends to decrease due to reduced commercial consumption and overall demand. Platinum?s price peaked at almost $2,300 (USD) per troy ounce ($74/g) in March 2008 driven by production concerns (arising partly from problems in South African mines). It later fell to $780 (USD) per troy ounce ($25/g) in November 2008.

For this reason, I primarily consider gold and silver in both ingots and coins. I strongly prefer gold due to its global demand, but occasionally purchase silver, very occasionally. my ingot/coin mix of gold is approximately 25%:75% since I consider gold to be a long-term asset. I appreciate the collectability spread inherent in gold coins, and also want some ability to sell gold if the situation warrants. Ingots would be the first to go, so I have diversified my precious metals holdings past simply gold.

I have generally stayed away from mining stocks simply because they are a more complex issue than ingots or coins. to delve into gold and/or silver mining equities should require some research into energy requirements, environmental considerations and the political environment. I stick to the basic metal and bullion coins.

A very difficult decision is whether to take actual physical possession of a gold investment or not. without going into the details of why, I?ll simply say that I do NOT take possession of ingots. Now with coins, I usually do not take possession although I do have a few in a lock deposit box. why? first these are usually physically the smaller issues and the ones I think are prettier. sometimes I use these as gifts at graduations and weddings. In the last 20 years, only one (1) time has my gold coin gift ever been duplicated by a coin gift from someone else.

Generally, I have seen gold; my silver holdings just are not very significant, be a minor percentage but an important diversification of my long term assets. I have generally placed at least 10% and rarely over 20% of the total investment value into precious metals. Note that I have SOLD (ingots) to maintain the not-over-20% which has consistently resulted in realizing a marked profit from peaking gold prices. a simple strategy that totally removes timing from the investment buy-sell consideration.

It's hard to think of anything veteran VMA star Beyoncé could have done to make her Sunday (August 28) performance slot during the big show an even bigger deal. Except maybe using it to reveal that she's pregnant.

"Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet, I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me," Queen B said as an introduction to "Love on Top," hinting to the world the news that she had alluded to on the black carpet just an hour before when she cradled her belly and teased that she would be making some kind of "announcement."

With a blinding light beaming out behind her, Beyoncé took the stage in a purple spangly tuxedo jacket, black pants and white tuxedo shirt, still rocking her fierce six-inch heels of old, pregnant or not. Her blond hair blowing in the wind, and backed by six dancers wearing similar shimmering tuxes, the glowing diva gave new meaning to the lyrics, "Now everybody asks me why I'm smiling out from ear to ear."

The audience was clearly feeling the love also, with Adele singing along and Kanye West putting his arm around Jo Calderone (a.k.a. Lady Gaga) as they laughed and smiled at the set from their pal. Normally a spirited dancer who uses the whole stage, B kept her dancing to a minimum for most of the song, shuffling and rocking back and forth as she held onto the microphone stand while singing the 1960s-style R&B tune.

A veteran on the VMA stage, Beyoncé roped in upside down in 2003 to perform the first two singles from her solo debut, "Baby Boy" and "Crazy in Love." She returned three years later dressed in a trench coat over a black leather leotard for a run through "Ring the Alarm," which cemented her status as one of the event's MVPs. And if there was any doubt who runs the show, she put it to rest in 2009 when an army of female backup dancers joined her for an eye-popping version of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" that turned into a viral sensation.

While those appearances were full of her high-energy dancing, Lady B didn't pull it all the way up on Sunday, eventually making her way to the extended lip in front of the stage, throwing down and getting a bit wild as she brought the tune home with some of her signature, church-born power vocals. Rocking her body side-to-side and tossing her impressive head of hair as she encouraged the audience to put their hands together, Beyoncé ended the performance by dropping the mic, opening her jacket and rubbing her belly.

It was all smiles at that point, with Kanye giving his Throne-mate, proud papa-to-be Jigga, some heartfelt hugs and shoulder pats in honor of the blessed news.

If Jay sits on the throne and she's the Queen B, then that must mean their offspring will be a prince or princess, right?

Cheap drugs to cut heart risks "badly underused" (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? Cheap generic drugs to cut heart risk are substantially underused worldwide, with more than half the people who could benefit estimated not to be getting any of four simple and effective types of medicine, researchers said on Sunday.

Underuse is most acute in low-income countries, where around 80 percent of people with a history of heart disease or stroke take none of the drugs, according to the largest clinical study to date on the issue.

But rich countries in the developed world are also not taking full advantage of the medicine.

Globally, around 60 percent of people with heart disease and up to half those who have had a stroke might not be taking a bloodthinner like aspirin, a cholesterol-lowering statin or one of two types of blood pressure pills, known as beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors or ARBs.

The findings were presented at the European Society of Cardiology annual meeting and published online in the Lancet medical journal, where they were described as "stark and alarming" in a commentary by Dr Tony Heagerty of the University of Manchester.

The disappointing uptake of proven treatments will provide more ammunition for campaigners arguing that the world needs to do more to confront the problem of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, lung problems and cardiovascular complaints.

Cardiovascular disease affects more than 100 million people worldwide and 75 percent are in low- and middle-income countries, where access to medical care is often limited.

The United Nations has scheduled a summit in September on NCDs and some health organizations are concerned that rich countries are blocking progress by not agreeing to set clear UN targets.

The study by Dr Salim Yusuf of Canada's McMaster University and colleagues looked at 154,000 adults from 17 countries, including Sweden, Canada, Brazil, China, India, Iran and Zimbabwe.

More than 7,500 of these self-reported either a history of coronary heart disease or stroke. Overall, use of preventative drugs in this group was low with bloodthinners, mainly aspirin, taken by only 25.3 percent of individuals, beta-blockers by 17.4 percent, ACE inhibitors or ARBs by 19.5 percent and statins by 14.6 percent.

"GLOBAL TRAGEDY"

Yusuf said the findings were a wake-up call and showed that cardiovascular healthcare policy needed a major rethink, with a bigger role given to nurses to promote greater use of appropriate medicines in the community.

"It is terribly poor worldwide," he told reporters. "This is a global tragedy -- there is no other way to say this."

Blood pressure medicines used to be among the biggest sellers for pharmaceutical companies, but most are now off patent and available as cheap generics.

Statins, including Pfizer's Lipitor and AstraZeneca's Crestor, are still multibillion-dollar products but they also face increasing generic erosion, with the decline set to quicken when Lipitor loses U.S. patent protection later this year.

The researchers acknowledged their study had limitations, with self-reporting by patients potentially giving a misleading picture of disease incidence in some cases. They also said it was unclear to what extent the findings could be generalized to entire regions.

But the results of the study, which received funding from various sources, including drug companies, are in striking contrast to some smaller studies based on patients treated in hospitals or clinics that had indicated far higher drug use.

Yusuf said his team's study showed a different real-world picture of preventative treatment in the community, where many people regularly dropped out of medical care and stopped taking medicines after initial heart problems.

Asafa Powell pulls out of the 100 meters at worlds (AP)

DAEGU, South Korea ? Asafa Powell has been ruled out of the 100 meters at the world championships because of a groin injury, eliminating defending champion Usain Bolt's biggest rival from the marquee event.

Powell's manager Paul Doyle told The Associated Press on Thursday that the injury sustained several weeks ago was still giving the fastest man of the season trouble. He added that the Jamaican could be fit by the time of the 4x100 relay during the final weekend of the championships.

"The groin strain is still lingering," Doyle said. "He is not quite 100 percent."

The 100-meter heats open on Saturday and the race is traditionally the highlight of the championships. It is also the opening race in Bolt's quest for three sprint gold medals.

American rival Tyson Gay was injured in June and two other top performers are not in Daegu because of doping scandals, leaving Bolt with few credible challengers.

Powell had been running fast all through the season until he pulled out of the Crystal Palace Diamond League meet on Aug. 5 as a precautionary measure to protect his groin.

Doyle said it would take up to four more days to have a full recovery and did not rule him out for the Sept. 4 relay final. With Bolt, Jamaica is favored to win that race and defend its title.

Still, the withdrawal was a blow to the Jamaican team, which is seeking to extend sprint domination over the United States established at the Beijing Olympics.

"He is one of our top athletes," Jamaican federation president Howard Aris said. "His not being able to compete (in the relay) would be a big, big disappointment for us."

Powell has been Jamaica's anchor in the relays, taking the baton from Bolt on the final bend to take it home for gold in Beijing and in Berlin at the 2009 worlds.

In the 100, Powell is a former world-record holder and always showed promise to take a global title before disappointing at the event itself. He won bronze at the past two world championships.

At 28, Powell was primed for success this year. He ran 9.78 seconds in Lausanne, Switzerland, on June 30 for the top time of the season and narrowly lost by .02 seconds to Bolt in Rome on May 26.

But Doyle said the succession of three races over the weekend would have been too much at this stage for Powell.

"The running of the rounds would be problematic," he said, adding the decision to pull out of the 100 was taken after extensive testing of Powell's groin in Daegu. "The next day, it is still very sore again."

Because of the injuries and no-shows because of doping issues, the top performer in Daegu is Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago with a time of 9.85. Bolt's best time this season is 9.86.

With Powell out, Jamaican teammate Michael Frater will run in the 100.

"I didn't come here expecting to run the 100 but unfortunately Asafa wasn't able to make it," Frater said. "I'm here and I am ready to go."
