Some fans boo Madonna for praising Obama

Alexander Demianchuk / AP

Madonna drew boos and triggered a walkout by several concertgoers after she touted President Barack Obama on her "MDNA Tour" in New Orleans.

The Material Girl asked during Saturday night's performance: "Who's registered to vote?" She added: "I don't care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama."

Drawing boos in touting Obama over Republican Mitt Romney, Madonna followed: "Seriously, I don't care who you vote for ... Do not take this privilege for granted. Go vote."

Madonna is often outspoken. Some Colorado fans, mindful of a mass shooting there, complained she used a fake gun to shoot a masked gunman in a recent concert act in Denver. A Madonna concert in Paris in July drew ire when a video showed a swastika on a politician's forehead.

BBC Turns Off CEEFAX Service After 38 Years

The BBC has moved to digital "teletext"

Obligatory rant. As I commented on the BBC site, despite being piggybacked onto the analogue TV signal, old-style Teletext itself is- and always was- a digital service.

This matters not simply because it was digital, but more importantly because it was probably the first digital service- or digital anything!- aimed at the consumer market, at least in the UK.

And despite all the nostalgic ramblings, it has hardly been given any credit for what is probably its most significant aspect. Years before CDs came out, even before even the Apple II and friends launched the personal computer (and when the closest thing to a home computer was the Altair 8800 [wikipedia.org]), Teletext was digital and providing information on demand.

I don't feel the need to defend its shortcomings by modern standards- of course it's dated and basic, it's over 35 bloody years old and came out when even the 1 KB of memory needed to store a page would have been expensive. However, it was a fantastic achievement at the time and still heralded the digital age, however primitive it looks today. And it hacks me off that almost no-one is giving it credit in that area.

NESCom students work with some of country music's

BANGOR, Maine ? Country music fans have reason to be envious of seven New England School of Communications seniors who recently were surrounded by some of the best the genre has to offer.

The group returned this week from an immersive weeklong cruise, where country music was a constant companion. While nearly 2,400 adoring country music fans took in more than 100 live performances, NESCom students worked behind the scenes to make sure the shows went on without a hitch.

The idea to bring the students onboard came from Tim Cabral, a 1990 NESCom graduate, who started Florida-based Cruise Production, a company that organizes cruises featuring music from artists ranging from Tim McGraw and Lynyrd Skynyrd to KISS and New Kids on the Block.

The roster on the Norwegian ?Pearl? as it visited the Caribbean Oct. 14-21 included headliner Blake Shelton, and country stars Trace Adkins, Lee Brice, Easton Corbin, Randy Houser, Jerrod Niemann and Neal McCoy along with 17 up-and-coming country acts.

?This was the best of the best, I swear half of Nashville was there,? said Eric Ferguson, interim director of Audio Engineering at NESCom who went with the students.

Cabral reached out to NESCom to offer an opportunity for seniors in the school?s Live Sound Technology program to work as stage crew on board the ship during its week at sea.

Cabral?s company covered plane tickets and other travel expenses and gave the students rooms on the ship in exchange for their work setting up shows, according to Ferguson.

?It was actually kind of thrown in my lap,? Ferguson said.

He said some of his students hadn?t flown before, and one had never left the state. One thing all students had in common is a passion for music and desire to work in the industry.

?Being on the ship really opened up the eyes of all of us,? said Chris Daniels, a 21-year-old NESCom student from Exeter, N.H., who worked on the cruise. He said students worked long days setting up equipment for performers around the ship. The group ran wires and set up amplifiers, microphones and other equipment for various musicians who played on stages across the ship, including poolside, Daniels said.

?We worked with an outstanding crew who really knew their stuff,? Daniels said.

While Daniels said he and his classmates aren?t huge fans of country music, they appreciate any genre and are just happy to have the opportunity to get involved in the music industry and meet artists and potential future employers.

?We all have a great skillset coming from the sound program [at NESCom],? Daniels said.

Ferguson said the trip was a success. Every student came away with offers for summer freelance work in the music industry, he said.

?They shined, the students did so well,? Ferguson said, adding that he fielded compliments from performers, crew members and other staff on the ship, who lauded the students for their hard work and strong understanding of audio technology.

?It was an outstanding experience that I wouldn?t trade for anything,? Daniels said.

Cabral has cruises booked through 2015 and has told the school he?s likely to invite more seniors to come help out in the future and learn more about what goes on behind the curtain in the music industry, Ferguson said.

NESCom will host an open house from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, for anyone who might be interested in attending the school for any of its programs, according to Ferguson.

6.5 earthquake shakes Costa Rica's Pacific coast

(AP) ? A powerful earthquake struck Costa Rica's Pacific coast on Tuesday, swaying buildings and sending people running into the streets in the nation's capital of San Jose.

The 6.5-magnitude quake was centered in the Guanacaste region of the Central American country, only 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the popular tourist town of Nicoya, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It had a depth of 24.5 miles (39.5 kilometers), according to a preliminary report.

At the beach of Matapalo, an hour drive from Nicoya, residents said they heard a roaring sound when the quake struck.

"I'm shaken. But it doesn't feel close to how it sounds like. The sound was deafening," said Alberto Canales, a receptionist at the Hotel Riu Guanacaste.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties, however, from the 6.5 quake, which was followed by a magnitude-4.5 aftershock.

The original quake was felt in San Jose, where people ran out of buildings fearing they would collapse.

Vanessa Rosales, president of Costa Rica's National Commission for Emergencies, said no one had reported serious damage from Tuesday's quake. Red Cross officials also said no damages had been reported yet.

Rosales said that on Wednesday they will have a more complete picture of what the quake did.

The region suffered an even more powerful earthquake last month, when a 7.6 earthquake rattled the same coasts, causing panic, evacuations but minor damage.

Seismologists both in the U.S. and Costa Rica said the quake is probably an aftershock of the Sept. 5 major earthquake.

"It is a very good likelihood that we are looking at an aftershock," said USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu.

Egypt aims to end late-night shopping to save energy

CAIRO (Reuters) - Business has flourished for Cairo's store owners and itinerant street traders since a popular uprising ushered in 20 months of light-touch law enforcement, but the boom-time may soon be over.

A new government desperate to break with the administrative chaos that followed Hosni Mubarak's overthrow says it will enforce a national ban on late-night shopping next week and restore order to streets that have come to resemble vast open-air bazaars.

If the ban is enforced, it could cut an unsustainable state energy bill by shifting more human activity to daylight hours and shortening opening hours for power-hungry shops and stalls.

Some Cairo store workers welcome the prospect of a shorter working day. Some shop owners agree, but others say the ban makes no sense because most Egyptians want to shop late into the night.

"It is an appalling decision," said 28-year-old Mina Sabry, who sells women's clothes in a central Cairo mall. "How can we close the shops from 10 p.m. when real work starts from seven?"

"Workers at the shops are happy with the decision because we will be able to leave early," said Ibrahim Eid, an employee at a shoe shop. "Now we go home very late and transport is scarce."

Shortly before 10 p.m. in Cairo's working-class neighborhood of Shubra this week, streets were packed with shoppers bargaining with vendors.

As other north African cities go quiet after 10 p.m., much of Cairo comes to life with the din of car horns, the cries of street hawkers and music blaring from Nile pleasure boats.

Across Africa's biggest city, buzzing air conditioners cool shoppers and bright lights beam onto rows of mannequins wrapped in children's clothes, women's headscarves or gaudy underwear.

Families stay out late and babies can often be seen slumped asleep on the shoulders of window-shopping parents.

GOVERNOR NOT IMPRESSED

Many visitors enjoy the buzz of a city that comes to life in the cool of the night. Cairo's governor is less impressed.

"Who said Cairo is a night city?" said the governor, Osama Kamal. "If you mean tourism, tourism facilities are exempt from the decision. All countries in the world have a specific closing time for shops. We aren't inventing something new."

He said Egyptians should go to bed early and wake up early so the country can focus on boosting productivity.

"You can't expect the guy who stays in the street till 3 a.m to wake up early and work," he said. "There needs to be order."

Kamal estimates that predecessors in his job have changed the rules on the hours of Cairo commerce eight times, but the regulations were only rarely enforced.

On Tuesday, the first working day after the Eid al-Adha holidays, police will begin handing out fines to any owner of a shop open after 10 p.m. and to cafes and restaurants that stay open past midnight, said Kamal.

After a second fine, the government might withdraw an offending shopkeeper's license. The rules would not apply on weekends or holidays.

Success with the plan would suggest the new government of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, the winner of Egypt's first free and fair elections for the leadership, was marking a clear break with its unaccountable predecessors.

Failure would suggest official foot-dragging and popular hostility to the police continue, setting a bad precedent for more vital reforms such as streamlining a bloated bureaucracy, cutting energy subsidies and rationalizing taxation.

Some say the government is setting itself up for a fall with the new rules on shop closures.

It relies on a police force that has yet to regain full authority over the population since last year's uprising, which was driven partly by anger at a security establishment that routinely deprived citizens of their basic rights under Mubarak.

The government says the earlier closing times will save up to $6 billion annually.

Energy consumption is heavily subsidized by the state, but the cost has soared and the government needs to slash energy spending to balance its books and secure a $4.8 billion loan which it is seeking from the International Monetary Fund.

However, critics argue the government has chosen to fight the wrong battle.

"It is unrealistic because the police will not be able to force the shops to close," said Nabil Abdel Fattah from the al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. "It shows that those who proposed this are not qualified. They lack competence."

Ahmed el Wakeel, head of the General Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce, said the government had not waited for his organization's opinion before deciding on the shop closures.

One economist said that what the government saves in energy costs could be lost elsewhere.

"It will have a negative effect on trade and will increase recession and unemployment as a result of cutting shifts," said economic expert and professor Hamdy Abdel Azim.

"When sales decline, profits will decline, taxes will decline and the losses will be with the state treasury."

Latest contract talks involving Pa. State System of Higher Education ...

The faculty union and managers of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education returned to the bargaining table on Monday, but only slight progress was reported.

Nothing, though, was enough to prompt the faculty union to call off the strike authorization vote it has scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving, said Steve Hicks, president of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, which represents the more than 5,000 professors.

Hicks said the union rejected the system?s latest health care proposal and ended the three-hour session by offering a health care proposal of its own.

Kenn Marshall, a system spokesman, declined to discuss specifics of the talks, but said

the health care proposal that the system seeks is one that would be comparable to the plan other state employees have. ?

The faculty that teach the system?s more than 114,000 students at the 14 universities, including Shippensburg and Millersville, has been working without a contract since June 30, 2011. The faculty asked to take the unresolved issue to an outside arbiter but system Chancellor John Cavanaugh refused that request for binding arbitration. He said the financial implications of the contract were to great for the system to let an outsider decide.

The next bargaining session is set for Nov. 2. The sticking points lie in the areas of health care, distance education and temporary faculty pay.

Google to Launch New Devices, Android 4.2 at Oct. 29 Event [REPORT]

Google will unveil several new devices and a software update at its scheduled Oct. 29 press event, according to a company video leaked from an all-hands meeting.

[More from Mashable: iPad Mini: All the Rumors]

The Next Web is reporting Google has distributed an internal video that details and confirms speculations about what might be revealed at the upcoming event.

The video reportedly discusses the launch of a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 tablet, as well as one with 3G support. It also indicates Google is working with manufacturer Samsung to release a 10-inch tablet called "Nexus 10" that will run Android 4.2 ("Key Lime Pie"), and a Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG.

[More from Mashable: Google?s Disappointing Third Quarter [Infographic]]

Meanwhile, the new Android 4.2 mobile operating system will include a panoramic camera option and "tablet sharing" capabilities, which would allow more than one user to access the device with his own set of email and apps -- similar to how a family or business can switch between user settings on a Windows computer.

Earlier this week, Google sent invitations to the press for an Android event to be held in New York City. Although the invitation didn't detail what might occur, the tagline -- "the playground is open" -- suggests it will have to do with Google Play, the company's newly-rebranded Andriod Market.

The news came as Microsoft prepares for its Windows Phone 8 launch event, which will also be held on Oct. 29 -- and Apple gears up to unveil its rumored 7.85-inch iPad on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Google's new Samsung tablet is reportedly being filed under the name "Codename Manta." The device is expected to have a 2560?1600 pixel resolution and 300ppi, which is greater than the iPad's 264ppi.

Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch Nexus smartphone manufactured by LG is said to tout a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon processor, a 1280x768 display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage.

Mars soil sample delivered for analysis inside rover

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has ingested its first solid sample into an analytical instrument inside the rover, a capability at the core of the two-year mission.

The rover's Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument is analyzing this sample to determine what minerals it contains.

"We are crossing a significant threshold for this mission by using CheMin on its first sample," said Curiosity's project scientist, John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "This instrument gives us a more definitive mineral-identifying method than ever before used on Mars: X-ray diffraction. Confidently identifying minerals is important because minerals record the environmental conditions under which they form."

The sample is a sieved portion -- about as much material as in a baby aspirin -- from the third scoop collected by Curiosity as a windblown patch of dusty sand called "Rocknest." The rover's robotic arm delivered the sample to CheMin's opened inlet funnel on the rover's deck on Oct. 17.

The previous day, the rover shook the scooped material inside sample-processing chambers to scrub internal surfaces of any residue carried from Earth. One earlier scoopful was also used for cleaning. Additional repetitions of this cleaning method will be used before delivery of a future sample to the rover's other internal analytic instrument, the Sample Analysis at Mars investigation, which studies samples' chemistry.

Various small bits of light-toned material on the ground at Rocknest have affected the rover's activities in the past several days. One piece about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) long was noticed on Oct. 7. The rover team postponed use of the robotic arm for two days while investigating this object, and assessed it to be debris from the spacecraft.

Images taken after Curiosity collected its second scoop of Rocknest material on Oct. 12 showed smaller bits of light-toned material in the hole dug by the scooping action. This led to discarding that scoopful rather than using it to scrub the processing mechanisms. Scientists assess these smaller, bright particles to be native Martian material, not from the spacecraft.

"We plan to learn more both about the spacecraft material and about the smaller, bright particles," said Curiosity Project Manager Richard Cook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena. "We will finish determining whether the spacecraft material warrants concern during future operations. The native Mars particles become fodder for the mission's scientific studies."

During a two-year prime mission, researchers are using Curiosity's 10 instruments to assess whether the study area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life. JPL, a division of Caltech, manages the project and built Curiosity. For more about Curiosity, visit: http://www.nasa.gov/msl , http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/msl and http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl .

Italy's Supreme Court Rules Cell Phone Brain Cancer Work Related

Italy's Supreme Court today upheld a work-related brain cancer claim for an executive who was required to use a cell phone on the job. Workers' Compensation benefits were awarded.

Click here to read: "Italy court ruling links mobile phone use to tumour" (Reuters)

"Marcolini developed a so-called neurinoma affecting a cranial nerve, which was apparently not cancerous but nevertheless required surgery that badly affected his quality of life.He initially sought financial compensation from the Italian Workers' Compensation Authority (INAIL) which rejected his application, saying there was no proof his illness had been caused by his work.
But a court in Brescia later ruled there was a causal link between the use of mobile and cordless telephones and tumours.
Italy's supreme court rejected an INAIL appeal against that ruling on Oct. 12 though its decision was only reported on Friday."

After Pandit, a smaller Citi could get smaller yet

(AP) ? The incredible shrinking bank may have to shrink more.

In the hours after Tuesday's surprise announcement that Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit was stepping down, speculation was rife, and facts scant, about what lay ahead for the nation's third-largest bank.

Pandit left after a series of embarrassments and missteps that apparently unsettled Citigroup's board, including a "no" vote from shareholders on his pay package and a ruling from the Federal Reserve that the bank was not strong enough to raise its stock dividend.

Under his successor, one possibility given high odds by financial analysts is a strategy of more cost-cutting, more shrinking and more focus on boring, traditional banking, like making loans.

"It's going to get a lot smaller," said Gerard Cassidy, a long-time banking analyst at RBC Capital Markets. "You've got to shrink to make big money."

In the nearly five years since Pandit took over as CEO, he shed businesses and cut jobs. Staff fell from 375,000 when he took over to 262,000.

Once the nation's largest bank, Citi is now the third-largest, with $1.9 trillion in assets. It trails JPMorgan Chase, with $2.3 trillion, and Bank of America, with $2.1 trillion.

Citi's new CEO is Michael Corbat, 52. He had been the CEO of Citigroup's Europe, Middle East and Africa division. He also ran Citi Holdings, which contains assets that Citi wants to sell.

Because Corbat isn't widely known, analysts Tuesday were not sure how he might change the direction of the company.

For clues, some are looking to someone more well-known: the man thought to be behind Pandit's departure, Citi Chairman Michael O'Neill. O'Neill became chairman in March, when Richard Parsons left after three years.

O'Neill was elected CEO of Barclays, the British bank, in 1999 but had to give up the job immediately because of heart problems. He joined Citi's board in March 2009. O'Neill had also been CEO of Bank of Hawaii Corp., where he was a big cost-cutter.

"When he ran Bank of Hawaii, he shut down up to 50 percent of its branches. It's a startling number," said Cassidy. He added that at Citi, "if the branch banking businesses doesn't make sense in parts of the United States, (he'll) get rid of it."

Tom Brown, founder of hedge fund Second Curve Capital, agreed.

"O'Neill downsized tremendously, and that's what I think you'll see here," he said.

For years, the goal in banking was to get bigger, spreading expenses over more and more customers and offering a smorgasbord of services. This was the vision of Sandy Weill, the former Citi CEO who built the bank through several deals.

But the appeal of the one-stop shop, though not dead, has lost its luster since the financial crisis. Many banks, Citi included, were so sprawling, they didn't even know the risks they had assumed.

As the housing market imploded, Citi lost $32 billion in 2008, according to FactSet, a financial data provider. Nearing collapse, the bank took $45 billion in government money.

The government converted $25 billion into an ownership stake, which it sold in December 2010 for a $12 billion profit. Citigroup had repaid the other $20 billion in December 2009.

In a conference call late Tuesday with analysts who admitted they were puzzled by Pandit's sudden departure, O'Neill would say only that the CEO submitted his resignation and the board accepted.

The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported that Pandit was essentially ousted by the board after the shareholder vote on his pay, the failure to pass the Fed's standards for raising the dividend, and a writedown of Citigroup's stake in a joint venture with Morgan Stanley.

O'Neill gave few details about how the bank may change after Pandit. But he did note that it will be "extraordinarily focused on our expense level."

Some analysts speculated the bank may place less emphasis on Wall Street trading and helping companies sell stocks and bonds to the public, the so-called investment banking in which Pandit had expertise. The business is volatile, with blockbuster profits occasionally followed by big losses.

Instead, the focus could shift to commercial banking, what Daniel Alpert, managing partner of Westwood Capital, calls the "dull and boring" businesses of lending to companies and consumers.

Dick Bove, a bank analyst at Rochdale Securities, thinks Citi will not only emphasize commercial banking, but will shift focus more overseas where the bank faces fewer rivals and could charge higher interest rates.

"If you look at domestic commercial banking, you have lower interest rates, you have higher losses, you have regulation and a high degree of competition," he said. "If you go overseas, you don't have any of those. You have tremendous growth."

Citi manages 200 million accounts with customers in 160 countries.

Corbat also spoke to analysts on the conference call but, as was the case with O'Neill, gave little indication how Citi might change. Corbat has worked at Citi and its predecessors since he graduated from Harvard in 1983.

Pandit's resignation came a day after the bank announced what many analysts had hailed as terrific earnings for the third quarter.

"It feels very abrupt to us," one analyst, Mike Mayo of CLSA, said on the conference call. "We're all scratching our heads, and thinking, 'What just happened?'"

O'Neill replied, "What happened is Vikram submitted his resignation."

Pandit is credited with not only slimming the bank, but removing it from government ownership after the bailout and righting its balance sheet after billions in losses on bad mortgage investments made before he took the helm. But he came under criticism for not cutting expenses enough last year.

"You're in a recovery mode, and the last thing you should do is make investments that retard that," said Second Curve's Brown of the bank's 2011 investments overseas and in branches. "Last year was terrible."

Said Cassidy: "I don't know if (Pandit) was pushed out or quit, but I don't think he was following the game plan of O'Neill."

Theatrical Staging or Real Estate Staging: A Lesson Learned ...

My husband Roger and I recently sold our big old apartment on Riverside Drive.?We had moved into the building ?in time to celebrate our daughter?s first birthday in 1975. Six years later our son was?born there (well, almost ? we got to the hospital just in the nick of time!) When the apartment next door came on the market we borrowed money to connect the two spaces; Roger and I had ample workspace, and our kids could run and play.

We were two country kids at heart, lucky in love and real estate, living our dream in Manhattan with a spectacular river view.

Thirty-seven years later we knew it was time to cash in our asset and (gulp) move on. Our kids had been happily independent for years, and even with two grandchildren FIVE bedrooms was ridiculous.?

Deanna Kory, our beautiful real estate broker,?recommended?staging?the apartment. I didn?t know what it meant.?Theatrical staging?refers to the mounting of a play;?real estate?staging,?I learned, means removing all traces of people living in the apartment so prospective buyers won?t get distracted, and will imagine themselves living there.?

I hated the idea. One theatrical truth I?ve learned over the years is that specificity makes a landscape universal;?removing specificity makes it generic. Yet Deanna advised that staging could increase the selling price from 5 to 125 times the cost of staging (!) Well,?Roger and I agreed that?this was real estate, not theatre, and we got to work.

? Samuel Morgan Photography

Plasterers, painters, window-washers, rented furniture (beige), lamps (square), towels (ugly) and chatchkas (weird) invaded our turf. Amanda Wiss and her company?Urban Clarity?got us organized,?and our son Sam,?an architectural photographer, did a photo-shoot of the results. The fine photos didn?t resemble the comfy home in which we?d raised our family. But it was ready to sell.?

Preparing to show the apartment reminded us of the half-hour-call that precedes every performance: it looks hectic but really isn?t. It?s a meticulous routine.

Our meticulous routine: make beds, poof pillows, empty wastebaskets, clear every surface, vacuum (Roger), arrange fresh flowers (me), leave no traces of normal life, exit to the Metro Diner. Contemplate our future, wait for Deanna?s ?all clear? text, then head on home.?

Eventually the perfect buyers arrived. And as the lovely young mother described how her family would live in our space, I knew the staging had worked.?

But there?s another chapter to our story? where did we go??

HA! ?Not very far: we are now living 10 feet 2 inches below our former home. And here?s the beauty part: our new apartment was?NOT staged,?which I believe is the reason we got it. ?

We were always fond of the elderly couple downstairs ? they were good neighbors. Distinguished college professors who loved world travel and NY?s Upper West Side, they often gathered students in their book-lined home, and engaged in heady discussions of physics, language and art.

It seemed natural that when our dear neighbors died (a couple of years apart) it was in the home they loved. In fact, their clothes were still hanging in the closets when the apartment was being shown, and their books and paintings were everywhere. It looked as if one of their salons was about to begin. Their apartment reflected a highly specific way of life; in other words, it was staged according to the theatrical definition of the word. And it simply did not sell.

We knew that our neighbors? apartment was for sale six months before ours. We would?ve bought it immediately if we didn?t have to sell ours first (we couldn?t make an offer contingent upon a sale) and we were convinced we?d miss the opportunity. We were wrong. ?428 days after it came on the market?our offer was accepted.

I will forever recommend real-estate-staging to anyone who wants to sell their apartment.

Theatrical staging? Nope. Though it sure worked in our favor!

In the meantime, the Hudson River?is a most inspiring setting. Roger and I thank our lucky stars for it every day.?

We may have moved? but we?re still here.?

?

Neuroscientists find the molecular 'when' and 'where' of memory formation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? Neuroscientists from New York University and the University of California, Irvine have isolated the "when" and "where" of molecular activity that occurs in the formation of short-, intermediate-, and long-term memories. Their findings, which appear in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offer new insights into the molecular architecture of memory formation and, with it, a better roadmap for developing therapeutic interventions for related afflictions.

"Our findings provide a deeper understanding of how memories are created," explained the research team leader Thomas Carew, a professor in NYU's Center for Neural Science and dean of NYU's Faculty of Arts and Science. "Memory formation is not simply a matter of turning molecules on and off; rather, it results from a complex temporal and spatial relationship of molecular interaction and movement."

Neuroscientists have previously uncovered different aspects of molecular signaling relevant to the formation of memories. But less understood is the spatial relationship between molecules and when they are active during this process.

To address this question, the researchers studied the neurons in Aplysia californica, the California sea slug. Aplysia is a model organism that is quite powerful for this type of research because its neurons are 10 to 50 times larger than those of higher organisms, such as vertebrates, and it possesses a relatively small network of neurons -- characteristics that readily allow for the examination of molecular signaling during memory formation. Moreover, its coding mechanism for memories is highly conserved in evolution, and thus is similar to that of mammals, making it an appropriate model for understanding how this process works in humans.

The scientists focused their study on two molecules, MAPK and PKA, which earlier research has shown to be involved in many forms of memory and synaptic plasticity -- that is, changes in the brain that occur after neuronal interaction. But less understood was how and where these molecules interacted.

To explore this, the researchers subjected the sea slugs to sensitization training, which induces increased behavioral reflex responsiveness following mild tail shock, or in this study, mild activation of the nerve form the tail. They then examined the subsequent molecular activity of both MAPK and PKA. Both molecules have been shown to be involved in the formation of memory for sensitization, but the nature of their interaction is less clear.

What they found was MAPK and PKA coordinate their activity both spatially and temporally in the formation of memories. Specifically, in the formation of intermediate-term (i.e., hours) and long-term (i.e., days) memories, both MAPK and PKA activity occur, with MAPK spurring PKA action. By contrast, for short-term memories (i.e., less than 30 minutes), only PKA is active, with no involvement of MAPK.

The study's other co-authors were Xiaojing Ye, a postdoctoral fellow in NYU's Center for Neural Science, Andreea Marina, an undergraduate at UC Irvine at the time of the study. The research was conducted at NYU's Center for Neural Science and UC Irvine's Center for Neurobiology of Learning and Memory.

This work was supported by grants RO1 MH 041083 and RO1 MH 081151 from the National Institute of Mental Health, part of the National Institutes of Health, and a grant IOB-0444762 from the National Science Foundation.

Jobs outlook worsens as mining states suffer

The outlook for the jobs market worsened in September with a key gauge of future hiring intentions slumping for the sixth consecutive month, exposing weakness in the mining states of Western Australia and Queensland.

The ANZ Job ads index fell 2.8 per cent in September, accelerating a 2.3 per cent fall in August, putting the level of job ads 10.8 per cent below a year ago.

"Total advertisements have fallen for the past six months, and in more recent times this decline has been seen across all states," said ANZ head of Australian Economics and Property Research Ivan Colhoun.

Newspaper job advertisements fell 10 per cent in September in Western Australia, and 5.3 per cent in Queensland. In South Australia they fell 2.2 per cent. Newspaper ads fell 3.6 per cent in September, while internet ads fell 2.7 per cent in the month, ANZ said.

In New South Wales newspaper ads fell 5.9 per cent, while in Victoria they rose 0.6 per cent in September, while in Tasmania they rose 5 per cent.

Newspaper ads, although in structural decline, are used in conjunction with the broader online ads index to gain a picture of the states' relative demand, ANZ said.

"Consistent with some recent project delays and cancellations in the mining sector, along with falls in the prices of Australia's key commodity exports, newspaper job advertisements in the mining states of Western Australia and Queensland declined in September," Mr Colhoun said.

Companies cutting jobs

In recent months, a string of companies have announced mass lay-offs and project cancellations, including petroleum refiner Caltex which chopped up to 630 jobs in Sydney, iron ore miner Fortescue cut 1000 jobs as a result of the slowdown in demand for the commodity. BHP Billiton and Xstrata Coal cut a combined 900 jobs last month.

The cuts are occurring as prices for commodities important to Australia fall and the outlook for demand from Asia becomes less clear.

Australia's jobless rate of 5.1 per cent in August is expected to rise to 5.3 per cent in September, when the data is released on Thursday. Although the headline unemployment figure has never breached 6 per cent since the financial crisis hit, analysts speculate that the strong number masks pockets of underlying weakness.

The Reserve Bank, in cutting the official rate to 3.25 per cent this month, flagged a weaker jobs market to come despite the strength in the official ABS figures.

"Labour market data have shown moderate employment growth and the rate of unemployment has thus far remained low," governor Glenn Stevens said in the statement accompanying the rate cut decision. "The bank's assessment, though, is that the labour market has generally softened somewhat in recent months."

ANZ had earlier overstated the strength in the job ads index, saying it had received inaccurate data from a smaller provider of internet-based advertising in May. It later issued a correction of past data in June.

Mr Colhoun said the weakness in the mining states in September, along with the general slowdown in the labour markets, rather than a rise in the official unemployment rate, likely "hastened the RBA's decision to cut" the official cash rate to 3.25 per cent from 3.5 per cent last week.

The RBA reduced the cash rate amid signs that Australia's mining investment boom was slowing, while the pace of growth in China was also slowing.

Steps to a Better Retirement by Investing in the Right Stocks

The word ?stocks? conjures images of panicking corporations, negative red numbers being flashed at the final bell, and maybe even soup kitchens for some people.

Whatever preconceived notion you have about stocks being a curse needs to be eradicated. Stocks have been the sole reason for many people?s financial success. Especially for those of us who are planning our retirements, stocks can be extremely beneficial because they can help investors reach their long-term goals.

You do not have to be an expert to invest in stocks or to manage your own finances. You just have to know which stocks make for sound investments. There are some things you should take into consideration before you invest, however, and it can?t hurt to discuss matters with a financial advisor before you make your decision.

Let?s start by establishing a proper image of what stocks are. By definition, stocks represent partial ownership of a corporation. When you purchase stock, you purchase a small portion of a company. Shareholders of stock can benefit in two ways:

1. Income?the companies whose stocks bring in really good returns usually offer their shareholders dividends (quarterly distributions of cash).

2. Capital Gains?when an investor is able to sell a piece of stock for more than he or she bought it for, they have achieved capital gains.

Retirees nowadays are living longer than their parents. It goes without saying that longevity is a good thing, but with that increase in retirement years comes a need for even more planning.

Investing in stocks allows your retirement fund to continue to grow even while you are using it. You can invest in stocks either directly or indirectly.

If you choose to purchase stocks directly, you will need a brokerage account. For every piece of stock that you buy, you will pay a commission to your brokerage firm for completing the transaction. If you choose to invest directly, you will want to make certain that you do not put all of your eggs in one basket; invest in a variety of different industries, and avoid putting more than 10 percent of your portfolio into any one stock.

You may also invest indirectly by investing in a mutual fund. With mutual funds, financial professionals decide which stocks to invest your money in and when is the best time to sell them. Unlike purchasing stocks directly, a mutual fund immediately diversifies your portfolio because it buys a share of another portfolio that includes more than one security.

Always start by investing a small portion of your finances. That way, if you find that you are happy with the way a piece of stock performs, you can invest more in it instead of having risked too much and losing it. It is also of great importance that you make certain that you are comfortable with the level of risk that you will be taking prior to making any investment. You certainly do not want to compromise your peace of mind for the sake of trying to multiply your wealth. However, after weighing the many benefits that retirees can enjoy from investing in stocks, the risks will seem minor by comparison.

Google Launching AdWords Business Credit Card To Boost SMB ...

When small businesses need to make investments in IT or other operations, it?s often the companies selling them the goods that help with financing solutions. Now it looks like Google is using that model to help drive more dollars to AdWords search advertising.?Google says?that from Monday it is launching a new service in the UK,?AdWords Business Credit, which offers credit to companies specifically in the SMB sector to boost their online ad spend with the company.

This is not the first time that Google has offered credit to drive more AdWords investment ? it?s been running a pilot with 1,400 companies in the U.S. for a year. Before that Google had run special offers giving people credits for more AdWords spend each time they invested in AdWords. This, however, is the first full commercial service of this kind.

The track record in the U.S. has been positive enough to see the company moving to full launches: In a blog post, Brent Callinicos, VP Treasurer for Google, notes that 74 percent of those in the U.S. pilot now use AdWords Business Credit as their ?primary form of AdWords payment.?

Google will be following the UK launch with more invitations to users in the U.S. ahead of a full launch there, as well.

The UK launch is being run with Barclaycard in the UK and Comenity Capital Bank in the U.S. ? both MasterCard-based cards.

In its Q2 earnings, Google noted that revenues, which it derives primarily from advertising, were $10.96 billion, a 21 percent increase over the year before. Revenues from the UK were $1.18 billion, or 11 percent of Google?s revenues in Q2. That?s level with the year before, and it could be that Google is going for a two-sided strategy here: both increasing business in the UK market, as well as coming up with more aggressive solutions for building up its ad business in a sector that has perhaps been hardest hit in the economic downturn.

While Amazon has lately been offering credit to its merchant partners in the form of?Amazon Capital Services, Google is clear to note that AdWords Business Credit is only for AdWords ? no other purchases are allowed.

Interest rates in the UK will be?variable at 11.9 percent APR Representative, while the U.S. will be at 8.99 percent, as it has been in the pilot. Neither card will have annual fees, Google notes. This is lower than basic credit card rates, but given that the spend on these cards will all be going to Google, it?s a lucrative credit bet for the company. ?You can assume we?re not doing this to lose money,? Callinicos said in an?interview in the FT. He also noted, though, that this is not seen as a ?profit center? for Google in the bigger scheme of things.
